A number of personal interviews were conducted with people in the church who had been hospitalized or bereaved in the last year.  Each was asked how many church people other than pastoral staff or their own family visited them during their difficult time.  A Sunday school class was then offered to train laypeople in such visitation skills, accounting for a variety of situations. The project explores texts on preaching to determine the degree to which they see transformation as the purpose of preaching.  Walter Brueggemann and Walter Wink offer insight into what transformation means and how it comes about. Transformative preaching seeks to help the listener move from the destroying way of dominant cultural values to the giving way of covenant rooted in neighbor love.  The preacher evokes transformation with Scriptural images that offer alternative visions of how life can be lived faithfully and meaningfully.  The project develops a model for preaching that will aid in the transformative work of pastoral ministry, and demonstrates this model in three sermons.
