It is a challenging aspects of life.  Traumatic events may come while serving as a member of the armed forces in a time of combat.  Knowing how to conduct therapy is only one element of providing care.  This project will look at how attachment, liturgy, ritual, counseling, and preaching can serve as elements of pastoral care.  Exploring these elements provides a reminder of how we tap into valuable procedures for pastoral care. Getting help enables a person to cope. A biblical survey and literature review established the value of leadership coaching and the four commitments: Guide Others, Gift Development, Guard the Gospel, and Godly Conscience. A mixed methods approach was employed using pretest and posttest surveys to evaluate the efficacy of the program. Because the emphasis of their education and practice is on the needs of their patients and families, these students often have little time to reflect on the profound theological questions that suffering evokes.  This project addresses the concern that in the process of dealing with profound suffering in their patients, nursing students do not receive adequate support for their own spiritual formation.  Using phenomenological methodology, eleven senior baccalaureate nursing students were interviewed about their experiences with patients who were suffering.  The results of the interviews were analyzed, and four themes emerged: the importance of preparation, the need to acknowledge the reality of the situation, the significance of obtaining support, and the necessity of self care. A number of personal interviews were conducted with people in the church who had been hospitalized or bereaved in the last year.  Each was asked how many church people other than pastoral staff or their own family visited them during their difficult time.  A Sunday school class was then offered to train laypeople in such visitation skills, accounting for a variety of situations. The cases are reviewed along four parameters that define basic conditions needed for a human being to be well and to thrive: i.e., connection, identity, freedom, and power; and from three perspectives: family systems using Edwin Friedman's work, individual psychology using Karen Horney's work, and spiritual theology using Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises. The approach used to bring about justice has been in the form of protests, political activism and writing political representatives. However, Unitarian Universalism has not intentionally focused on the pastoral care needs of people in their congregations who are most wounded by injustice. This project describes an intentional approach to cross-cultural pastoral care that employs a new integrated multifactorial assessment model to support racial and ethnic diversity in Unitarian Universalist congregations, by calling attention to the significance of culture on the identity formation of individuals who are labeled by the dominant culture as minorities. The thesis begins by surveying the congregation to learn about their three greatest personal crises.  Thirteen messages were delivered on Sunday mornings to address these crises.  Detailed fill-in-the-blank sermon notes were included in each Sunday's bulletin.  These inserts were accumulated into a resource booklet after the project as a quick reference tool to assist the congregation in caring for their neighbours, family and friends during a future crisis.
