Its theological justification comes from the fact that pastor and laity alike share in the shepherding ministry of Jesus Christ in the church.  To both equip my present lay shepherds in the 'basics' of pastoral care and to motivate them to train, in turn, still more shepherds, I proceeded as follows: I led ten of these lay shepherds through a series of eight 'shepherding seminars' on the biblical/theological justifications for giving pastoral care; the four 'givens' of human life; the ten stages of grief; the differentiation of different types of depression; and the development of empathetic listening skills. At the conclusion of these studies, each of the now 'trained' shepherds was assigned some aspect of the aforementioned topics and asked to teach it to a small cadre of 'untrained' shepherds newly recruited from the congregation at large. The project developed the African interdependent model, a multi-dimensional approach in which pastoral diagnosis and treatment is measured on a continuum of core relational dynamics.  The revisionist correlational model was used to correlate the thoughts of Althea J Horner and John S Mbiti. An African corporate personality is compared and contrasted with the desiderata of organization and self.  The project concluded that psychoanalytic object relations theory and African corporate personality theory can be complementary. This model of the church comes from the gospel of Mark that presents Jesus as a servant.  If we are to fulfill the servant ministry of Jesus in the church, we need to use the laity to reach others.  The challenge is to get the congregation to understand the meaning of a servant church.  The conclusion of the research revealed a need to revamp the organizational structure of the church. Its theological conviction is that the incarnational shape of Jesus' life should also be the shape of the church's ministry: a ministry that is of the whole people of God, guided by its public servants.  The project was also built upon the psychological/sociological thesis that lay helpers can have significant outcomes in their peer counseling. Chapter 1 includes an exploration of the use of liturgy and pastoral care. Chapters 2-4 report the psychological, sociological, and theological needs of individuals who have experienced the crisis of terminal illness, rape, or abortion, respectively. In chapter 1, the significance and aim of the study are stated.  An effort is made to clarify authority in Christianity in chapter 2. Chapter 3 discusses the authority of the pastor in the church.  The authority of the pastor in the Korean church is dealt with in chapter 4.  The following chapters examine the authority of the pastor in the PCK by means of research and personal interviews (twelve hundred pastors and congregations are included). He executed the project with fifteen Tucson, Arizona, pastors from August 1991 to February 1992.
