Those who counsel in institutional settings in particular are struggling with the need and/or the opportunity to counsel those with whom they have some other role.  This is especially true for the individual who offers counseling within the bounds of the local church community.  A minister in the local church setting has many roles in the life of a congregation.  With these diverse roles in place, church members and others in the community turn to the minister for counseling.  The project is intended to shed light on duality and offer guidelines for the pastoral counselor who does counseling in the immediate context of the local church.  The issue of duality is studied from the perspectives of object relations theory and pastoral theology. A study on the theology of the church as community shows that when the community of believers is faithful to the truth it is radically different from the human community.  Recruitment and training of leaders for small groups is essential for this model to work. The program was assessed as to its importance and effectiveness by patients/residents, staff, doctors and by three colleagues.  The developing and implementing phrase was an action research, while the exploring stage was a survey study based on questionnaires, interviews and opinionnaires.  Pastoral care was seen as an important, integral part of the overall healing team and its effectiveness was confirmed by all participants.
