This project/thesis tested the hypothesis that ministering in an environment of religious pluralism causes the minister's theology to become more inclusive.  Four theological models for understanding religious pluralism were developed.  The models were then used with both a reflection group and a survey to test the hypothesis in the context of the Navy Chaplain Corps.  The data suggests that the hypothesis is often true. It is supported by a theology of ministry (biblical witness and historical overview) and an exploration of the nature of such programs.  A model of training supervision is suggested.  The collective feedback data of the trainers, a clergy peer observer, and the author based on his observation of video tapes of the sessions were used to evaluate the program's validity in increasing church members' self-confidence, pastoral identity, and competence as providers of pastoral care. The pastoral concerns addressed through preaching emerged out of the economic crisis occasioned by a rapid decline in the heavy manufacturing industry of the Great Lakes region.  Pastoral care and preaching are brought together when the preacher who proclaims 'God is for us,' offers a vision that leads to growth in grace.  Such preaching becomes a form of pastoral care for the people of God. This project used a series of workshops to educate clergy about spouse abuse.  In the workshops the clergy learned about the characteristics and personalities of both victim and perpetrator.  The workshop examined their knowledge of spouse abuse.  Most clergy are not equipped to minister to victims or perpetrators. Through the survey and research method two types of questionnaires were formulated and developed. They were then sent to a randomly selected group of clergy to elicit information in the pastoral care ministry of the church. Understanding women's interpretation of life experience can offer insight into ministering to women and help define an additional model of ministry and theology.  The study offers a theological reflection on women's experience integrated with pastoral ministry.  Surveys were mailed to a control group of 95 women; personal interviews with other women reflected on the responses. Theological interpretation on the responses is provided by parish staff, a college theologian, and the writer. The thesis then reviews the theology of God, church, and ministry of Joseph Ratzinger and Avery Dulles, evaluating both through reference to the pastoral experience.  The thesis then explicates the author's theology of God, church, and ministry arising out of the pastoral experence and the theology of both Dulles and Ratzinger. In the chapter dealing with tradition, the author portrays the history and development of internship among North American Lutheran theological educators.  Under culture, the theory of cognitive dissonance and a systemic method of pastoral care are related to internship supervision.  Under experience, the author probes his own history of field education supervision.
