Spiritual guidance is presented wtihin the context of contemporary spirituality, showing how it differs from pastoral counseling. Theology of any kind, which fills the ego needs of one individual or group at the expense of others will eventually make the church's life dysfunctional. Theological expression must provide positve ego fulfillment in order for the church to be what God intends. Six business persons met monthly with the pastor for one year. Thorugh a series of educational experiences and discussions, they developed a plan of ministry.  The project was based on a laboratory, or think tank, kind of model.  As a result of this extensive process the plan was well thought out, relevant, and tailored to the needs of the business persons in this particular local church. Most churches, however, need assistance in increasing the effectiveness of the congregation's ability to give care.  The writer developed a three-month training program for twelve persons to study the theology of caregiving, stages of human development, and caring skills.  Following training the trainees entered hurting situations under the writer's supervision. The method employed to determine the effective use of the biblical basis for tissue techniques was a pastoral ministry with four separate married couples counseled in eight fifty-minute sessions of pastoral therapy. First, there is data gathered from several week-end workshops for personal change conducted by a well-known pastoral counselor.  Second, there is a discussion of such issues as ethics in counseling, the work of the Holy Spirit, metaphors of theological importance, and a series of practical questions that deal with such issues as evangelism in counseling. Third, the work describes suggestions for pastoral identity as a result of the data collected. The first part of the project was an examination of the meaning of reconciliation followed by a study of the meaning of the sacrament of Holy Communion in relation to reconciliation.  The second part was a fourteen session study with leaders of a Presbyerian congregation.  The group planned three communion services for corporate worship and surveyed the congregation following the services.
