In the ecumenical curriculum that is developed, biblical theology sets the norms for pastoral identities, but these are understood to be in dialogue with psychology and contemporary pastoral theology.  The skill training included is in the context of seeking growth in the ability to claim deepened identity understandings in clinical encounter. The study involved eight learning sessions that identified the strengths which members had for a ministry of care. Individuals were trained to creatively use skills of caregiving to members and to the mission community of Bethany Christian Church in time of need.  The project also provided ways for participants who were unable to attend the sessions to become involved in caregiving. This process frees parishioners to live apart from the fear of death. Examples of spiritual guides who have achieved that freedom are St Monica, St Bernard of Clairvaux, Martin Luther, John Arndt, Paul Gerhardt, J S Bach, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The guidelines/strategies were developed during a care-giving ministry that was in operation from January 1972 through December 1987.  The summary and results are based on data compiled through the use of a guided interview format.  Interview questions were used at the beginning and end of the program.  An assessment of the program's effectiveness indicated that the program was a success.  This project is written to elevate the lives of poor Black single mothers.  Its roots are embedded in developing relationships and caring for a segment of our community that is all but forgotten, the inner-city or urban America.  The basic premise is that relationships are the keys to changing lives. Regardless of the plight of people, everyone wants to be in relationship with someone whom he or she can respect and trust. Such traditional approaches to students in Christian schools as classroom Bible teaching and chapel services are not functioning effectively in modern Japan. From his own experience, the author proposes a new approach of volunteer work programs formed by small groups.  When they are thrown into an entirely new life situation students ask existential questions.  The way is then open for teachers to explain meanings of the Christian message. The theories of Erikson, Fowler and others provide the basis for discussions.  The role of the teacher is crucial in this approach. Inappropriate reception or resistance to the care given by others results from a misunderstanding about the nature of faith.  A training program is designed which enables persons to understand how to receive care.  The author tests the program on twelve selected members of his congregation.  A refined version is being used to train every member in mutual care. By supporting grieving adults, churches can help children deal with grief in a manner which can alleviate further distress.  The project evaluates the theological meaning of death and surveys psychological studies on the impact of death.  It reviews the means of responding to grieving children.  Special attention is focused on how churches can help through pastoral care by clergy and lay helpers, the funeral service, and Christian education. The research involves pastors of the Parramatta/Nepean Presbytery.  Methods include personal and group discussion and questionnaires.  The results indicate that pastors are in need of pastoral care and that mateship is an acceptable model for such care. The project establishes support groups from which pastors are able to choose mates for mutual pastoral care.
