This dissertation takes a thorough look at Romans 6:1-14 in order to prepare a homiletic outline from which a sermon series is developed. Paul's situation, purpose for writing, and flow of thought are analyzed, and the verses are then studied in the original language. The terms 'gospel,' 'kerugma,' and 'contextualization' will be defined and delineated. Examining Paul's sermons in Acts with those by the early Apostles (Acts 2:14-42; 3:12-26) a unified threefold rhetorical methods and message is discovered. I proposed that doulos be translated slave based on the Pauline assessment and modeling of this biblical doctrine.  Relevant data was gathered using a mixed-method approach to equip PR to parallel two motifs or models: slaves of Christ with slaves to sin who support the prosperity gospel heresy.  The slave language was challenging as PR consists of offspring of American slaves. Yet PR leaders agreed to participate in this project to dispel misunderstanding and encourage an examination of biblical teaching on this avoided topic. The goal of this thesis project was to explore the impact of the personal discipline of physical activity as a necessity in being a good steward of the body while being faithful to fulfill one's pastoral call. The problem is that clergy, in a sedentary occupation, can become physically unhealthy by engaging in meaningful ministry but neglecting to take care of themselves as they care for others. The scope of this work looks at the Apostle Paul's claim that there is value in being both physically and spiritually healthy. This work listens in on written conversations between professional and spiritually healthy. This work listens in on the written conversations between professional authorities as they consider how physical fitness benefits the spiritual life of clergy. This thesis-project was tested by a three month project where clergy engaged in physical exercise three days a week for thirty minutes and reflected on the impact on their spiritual lives. Six sermons were preached from Paul's Epistle to the Colossians for the thesis author's Community Presbyterian Church, Edison, New Jersey. Church members served on two evaluative teams. Research focused on Colossians scholarship; Christology from dogmatic and Pauline theology; expository and doctrinal preaching issues; and listener response.  Questionnaires tested knowledge of Pauline teachings; in-depth reviews of the 2006 sermons; and 2008 follow-up on personal application of Pauline teachings and evaluation of subsequent sermons. This research was an evaluative study that focused on shared vision for a multicultural, interdenominational, and diverse congregation that transformed a dream into reality, and vision into victory. The findings gathered from this qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study served as effective working tools for new church development. It uses his primary works (especially City of God, Confessions, On Christian teaching, Commentary on Galatians and 84 propositions from the Epistles of Romans) as they develop Paul's theology of sin. It builds a theological foundation (based on four theological issues about sin: its origin, its nature, its consequence, and its remedy) in order to establish a correct understanding of the topic of sin in a contemporary context. Ultimately, it utilizes that information to develop a practical theology that is integrated into applicable Christian living in four areas: soteriology, evangelism, ecclesiology, and discipleship.
