Analysis of self-reported survey data with triangulation of biblical, theological and psychological literature reviews produced four principles of self-care essential for P-A clergy. Self-care must be holistic, focused on personal not congregational well being, practice active non-judgmental self-awareness, and accept personal limitations. Self-worth resides in God's acceptance, not ministerial success or failure. A brief comprehension of AAP-A clergy couples' uniqueness is presented. Spiritual formation, conservatism, and expressive love are matters of concern for AAP-A clergy couples facing marital anxiety. The biblical theme of expressive love is the framework for understanding the personhood in need and key to marital health. Family systems theories support biblical principles to formulate a counseling approach that elucidates expressive love. Ten husbands of female pastors in the House of God Church were identified to define their role as the 'first gentleman.' The methodology was approached from a pastoral counselor's perspective. Strategies of brief counseling theory (Stone, 2001) were used to develop survey and interview questions for the participants. The project noted similarities and differences among the generations represented, and addressed communication, finances, stress and burnout, church problems, time management, parenting, and conflict in the home.  These findings informed a marriage-enrichment retreat for married Bible college students in which 34 individuals participated. Theological and empirical data lead to the conclusion that certain modalities have been established within the ministry and church that are counterintuitive to the physical and spiritual welfare of the pastor.
