Spiritual gifts are expressed and may be found in a variety of levels of conscious behavior. The project offers a community model for discernment of gifts as a balance between the subjectivity of spiritual gifts inventories and the objective psychological implications of type theory. The author studied this thesis by locating church leaders according to Robert Kegan's personality balances and then observing their actual behavior through the process of making a key decision in the life of the local church.  He found that Kegan's theory of constructive-developmental personality was helpful in understanding the differences that were demonstrated in the various ways the church leaders envisioned, implemented, and evaluated the decision that confronted them.
