The author dialogued with twelve physicians focusing on the topic of grief and faith. These physicians shared storied of patients' deaths that were stressful that are consistent with national and international research on the topic. The resource described bioethical mediation as a new form of healthcare ministry that helps to resolve misunderstandings, issues, and conflicts among and between healthcare professionals, patients, and family members. The resource was evaluated by ten experts. The families were cared for with support and compassion, decreasing their levels of anxiety and allowing the healthcare team uninterrupted opportunities to assess and treat the patients. Qualitative research was employed to test the model's effectiveness, by means of pre- and posttest, questionnaires, and interviews. The intervention was based on peer patient narratives and was presented in video format for six consecutive weeks as either spiritually oriented or as factually oriented.  The spiritual transformation scale (STS) score of the spiritually oriented narrative group was significantly greater than the factually oriented narrative group. Using the qualitative research method, Grounded Theory, the project collected data through individual interviews with eight staff physicians, six house staff, and seven nurses. All interviewees acknowledged that overtreatment of dying patients makes working in an Intensive Care Unit difficult. House staff acknowledged feelings of failure at the death of their patients. Staff physicians acknowledged that it is easier to continue treating than to make a decision to stop, thus avoiding difficult conversations or ethical decisions. Disease frequently occurs when a patient's lifestyle is not in harmony with his/her attitudes, values and beliefs.  This study explores ways in which physicians and clergy can work together to foster wholistic health for patients.  The University of Michigan, Department of Family Practice has employed a full-time pastoral counselor/ethicist to further the cooperation between clergy and physicians.  Through a training program focused on counseling skills, clergy and physicians have developed comfortable working relationships.
