Strategic planning is the model used to intervene in the on-going life of this urban congregation that envisioning for the future may take place. The congregation was quite small for most of its life and entered the centennial year with a need of a new image of itself accounting for recent growth. Rural churches encounter particular dynamics as change and rapid transitional forces occur.  This research/action/reflection model examines one rural parish in-depth, and three other churches in moderate detail, as they move to address their transitional circumstances and position themselves for future ministry via a deliberate planning process.  Three theses with regard to future planning summarize the author's findings: the role of the pastor; authority and power for planning; and membership consensus of mission and future vision. This study reviews the thought of major thinkers from the fields of philosophy, theology, and architecture regarding the affective nature of such places.  An experimental planning workshop invites a religious congregation's members to identify symbolic expression desired in a sacred space. The project tests the usefulness of architect Chris Alexander's pattern language theory as the basis of a methodology for this purpose.
