After a model of 'servant leader supervision' was constructed, pastors were invited to a two-phase workshop.     The first phase introduced the model, the skills necessary to implementing it, and culminated in the pastors writing their own supervision plans.  The workshop's second phase (a month later) focused on their implementation efforts. Chapter one examines the context of this rural church.  Chapter two examines the biblical, theological and historical material associated with the nature and the purpose of the church, proposing that the church should be involved in worship, evangelism, discipleship, ministry and fellowship.  Chapter three examines contemporary material on the development and implementation of a mission statement and vision statement. Specific steps for the development of each statement are included and the process of implementation is discussed. Chapter four provides a detailed report of the completion of the project, examining each step carefully. The model utilized a sermon series and small group Bible study to increase the congregation's ability to perform long-term visioning. Consequences of the qualitative analysis indicated the intervention resulted in increased awareness of vision, related to spiritual calling in the lives of the small group and the congregation. The church benefits both from the plan and the process of developing the plan together. Research shows that people are more likely to support a plan that they have helped develop. This is especially true if the goals of the plan are in harmony with a person's own personal goals.
