Based on biblical study and literature research, the project proposes three phases through which relocating organizations pass: the current zone, the transformation zone, and the future zone. A congregational survey and interviews with seven pastors of relocated churches identify spiritual and emotional issues in each phase and the tasks involved in resolving them. Five congregations (United Methodist, United Church of Christ, Baptist, nondenominational, and Disciples of Christ) from Chicago and Lansing, Michigan, studied current trends in stewardship, salaries and benefits for clergy and lay staff, and outreach ministries.  The project developed new stewardship programs to encourage these congregations to re-establish themselves as servants to their communities. The project involves approximately 200 adults in study of three different approaches to mission.  This five-week study, conducted in the Sunday School, produced the raw material for a congregational mission statement that was adopted by the administrative board.  The process also involved many church members in actual mission projects.
