Its emergence has come as a result of the philosophical movement of postmodernism and a growing disdain towards modern culture. The main shifts in culture are a movement from empiricism to experience, individualism to community, and rationalism to revelation. Although these shifts are slight, their visible evidenve in the lives of Neo have confused and frustrated Moderns. The main focus of this work is the Western church's misunderstanding of the Neogeist and their initial; refusal to seek an understanding or work with Neo. Currently, a postmodern culture and church often encourage the individual to reshape gospel, God, and self.  Self-denial, godliness, and submission are shunned for self-fulfillment, relief, and lordship.  To confront this worldview, a study of the attributes of God was administered to Christian students in their early twenties. The scope of the dissertation includes an assessment of an evangelical seminary.  The terms evangelical, post-evangelical and spiritual direction are examined in light of current understanding and relevance to an academic institution.  Post-evangelicalism is a response to the current shifts in thinking, particularly that of post-modernism. The project includes a literature review, descriptors of the Appalachian and postmodern mindsets arising from that review, a survey based on those descriptors, survey results and conclusions.  The survey was distributed in a two-church United Methodist Charge in central Pennsylvania.
