Givens are the fragility of identity, assurance and authority, and concern about the loss of personhood, the integrity of difference, the abuse of power and the meaning of suffering. The preaching presented worldview issues raised by a postmodern perspective and provided insights based on a biblical and theological perspective that emphasized that there is absolute truth. Through the use of two case studies, one medical and one biblical, this thesis explores new ways of thinking through ethical challenges at the bedside. Drawing primarily on H. Richard Niebuhr's theological ethics, virtue ethics, and postmodern analysis, this thesis constructs a contextual, postmodern practical theology of bioethics. It proposes new ministry practices in bioethics. It calls for collaboration among bioethical methods to create a fitting response to challenging situations.
