However, the author discovered that switching to a method geared to predominantly postmodern hearers can leave more traditional hearers feeling 'left behind.' Over the sermons in this project he explored postmodern preaching methods, but also checked in with more traditional hearers. Data was gathered by survey and interviews in a group setting. For small churches, there are ways that we can preach to new generations so that none are 'lost' or 'left behind.' This thesis discusses variety in preaching styles as a way to be inclusive for all those worshiping in smaller congregations. The study lays out a biblical paradigm for engaging the postmodern generations that is based on the Apostle Paul's engagement with the pagan Athenian culture in Acts 17. The complex system of Cambridge Community Fellowship Church served as the case study for this project.  The framework for this study is provided by Eldin Villafañe's hermeneutical circle, which progresses as clarification (clarify the issue and the challenges at hand), conceptualization (applicable theological and sociological analysis), and confrontation (principles or next steps of addressing the issue).  Clarification involves examining two of the central elements of CCFC, its postmodern ethos and its emergence from the immigrant experience.  To that end, postmodern culture was studied from various angles.  Additionally, the development of second generation ethnic American identity was also studied. Conceptualization involved the movement towards developing a relevant postmodern theology applicable in the urban context. Conceptualization also involved the application of systems thinking to unpack the system of CCFC in order to address specific issues at CCFC.  Confrontation calls for the development of strategies and principles to address the various issues. A control group made up of church attendees between the ages of nineteen and forty was surveyed with an instrument designed to measure levels of orthodoxy and postmodern orientation. The same group was re-tested following an eight-week sermon series covering eight major Christian doctrines. Phase one will consist of the establishment of a group composed of ten to twelve postmodern persons. This group will be surveyed, interviewed, and will participate in a group discussion of issues relevant to the postmodern. The project leader will facilitate these meetings over a ten-week period. This group will seek to add new members weekly through the outreach efforts of the participants. Attendance records will be maintained, and the assimilation of postmoderns into the church will be measured via the Bible study ministry of the church. In the second phase a group of twenty to twenty-five church leaders will be assimilated to help evaluate how the church is responding to the needs of postmoderns. These participants will be surveyed and interviewed and will participate in a discussion of issues identified by the postmodern participants. The knowledge of these church leaders will be measured via pre and post tests. Phase three will be implemented in the worship service through a series of sermons designed to address the needs of a postmodern generation. Participants of both groups will conduct an analysis of the worship. The purpose of this project is to develop and enhance the church's efforts to engage postmoderns and to claim the postmodern context for Jesus Christ. It is built upon a biblical framework that offers the Christian worldview as plausible and credible to the postmodern person. Rather than fearing these changes, the author welcomes the opportunities preachers have in this age of heightened spiritual sensitivity.  The goal of this Project is to help preachers mobilize believers to reach unchurched people.  In postmodern America, increasing numbers of people have little to no church background.  Believers with a church background often struggle to relate to unchurched friends.  The Project contends that the preacher's sermon content and style of delivery can help equip believers to reach unchurched, unsaved friends for Christ.
