The four classic steps are: lectio, meditatio, oratio, and contemplatio.  Lectio divina is a resource for Christian spiritual formation.  The body of the dissertation consists of an analysis of a teaching project at Saint Peter's Lutheran Church, Highspire, Pennsylvania in 1989. Toward this end five separate strategies were utilized: an eight-week prayer course for volunteers; three sermons; a restructuring of the Sunday morning worship service to include a stronger emphasis on the pastoral prayer; a restructuring of the Wednesday night prayer service to encourage mutual congregational intercession; and the initiation of a continuing prayer ministry in the church. Chapter 1 described the goals, background, methodology, and meaning of prayer.  Chapter 2 provided the biblical-theological rationale.  The call to prayer, examples of prayer, and models of prayer were considered. Chapter 3 discussed the ministry aspect.  It involved eight weekly sessions of instruction followed by five weeks devoted to the sharing of prayer.  Chapter 4 described the research process.  The study group, control group, research design, hypothesis, variables, and evaluative components were discussed. Chapter 5 involved an evaluation of the program.
