The program included training lessons to equip a prayer group and activities to involve the church.  The historical method was used to gather data on the theology of prayer.  The descriptive survey method was used to gather data on prayer ministries and prayer for missions.  The director gave pretests and posttests to evaluate changes in the group's attitudes and changes in the church's behavior. The writings of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Rainer Maria Rilke, and three modern poets (Machado, Milosz, and Stafford) are then used to illustrate how these poets used their poetry as a form of contemplative prayer. A six-week study group examined seven written intercessions from various religious traditions, and focused on five 'circles of concern' which identified relationships from the self to the whole of creation.  The image of these 'circles' proved useful to the participants both in expanding their personal prayer life and in their appreciation of worship. Three devotional guides were written for Gloria Dei! Lutheran Church to use from Advent through Easter.  Thirty-five people were interviewed before and after the devotional books were used. The result was the discovery that the discipline of prayer creates a deeper hunger for God and awakens a call to be with God. Quantitative measurement was gained through statistical analysis of scores from identical pre- and posttest questionnaires. Non-quantitative evaluation included discussion, interviews, and observation. The results were positive.
