A complex statistical study involving the chi square was used to determine the accuracy of the thesis.  A testing procedure employing the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the Spiritual Orientation Profile was administered to 100 lay people and 100 clergy persons and the personalities and prayer lives were examined. Data gathered from 28 participants by an original questionnaire was analyzed in order to determine: if the group had a positive effect; which of Clebsch and Jaekle's four functions of pastoral care was most in effect; what variables (classifying and Pruyser's seven diagnostic) were most related to positive effect; and what program resources were reported as having the most positive effect. Fourteen church members followed a daily devotional plan for six weeks.  Tested before, during, and after the six weeks of daily devotions, the participants reported frequency of perceived hindrance to worship and prayer life in devotion to God. This was a study of twenty people who were divided into two groups.  The one group received eight lessons concerning process thought; the second group did not receive the lessons.  All twenty persons kept daily journals to record insights and feelings about God, self, and the world; all participants prayed daily for fifteen minutes during a period of eight weeks. A theoretical basis derived from Erickson's theory of ego development and the spiritual theologies of Nouwen and Macquarrie were used to critique and design a program for junior high students.  Breakaway, a program of prayer and meditation (by Mark Link) was adapted and implemented with a group of sixty-one junior highs over a period of twenty-eight weeks. The program was evaluated by questionnaires and interviews with students and professional educators.  Although the students did not increase their frequency of prayer, their understanding was broadened, they were using a greater variety of prayer forms, and showed a willingness to pray with other people. The workshop setting allowed a free interchange of ideas and dealt with the needs of the individual participants.
