The paper shows that the faith of the counselee can bring forgotten material to awareness and to resolution when prayer is used in the process of active imagination.  The notion of active imagination is found in the works of C G Jung.  Qualities of active imagination in some of the commentaries on Jung are listed.  After examining the effects of original sin, the author examines the process of redemption that seeks to heal these wounds of human nature. He then takes an in-depth look at grace and faith in this process of healing and examines the understanding of prayer as an instrument of this entire process. Christ-centered prayer has a special power.  Actual cases of counseling, prayer and active imagination help to understand the results of such a procedure to the counselee. Cultural problems have effected a weakened prayer-life for many Reformed Christians. Sociological conditions have led some to a loss of faith and lack of trust.  For others, role changes in the family have led to a breakdown in familial religious responsibility.  Prayer in the Reformed tradition is then looked at from biblical, historical and theological perspectives.  Biblically, prayer is communion with God. Prayer is traced historically from early Jewish worship to the Puritans.  Theologically, the paper looks at the transcendent and immanent attributes of God, the effect of sin, justification and sanctification on relationships, and how the church community influences our approach to God through prayer. To revitalize prayer-life, various methods of listening, meditating, keeping a journal, and healing are proposed and explained.  The strengths and weaknesses of the Reformed tradition are defined. Christian maturation is defined as growth toward having a Spirit-filled character as described in the New Testament.  A six month course was taught in six churches and involved thirty-four people.  Pre- and post-course psychological testing instruments were used as well as questionnaires at the end of the course.  The comparison of the testing instruments' data shows a significant growth toward Christian maturity as defined by the author. The report outlines biblical and theological bases for the concept of counseling through preaching.  Methodology entailed determination of issues people wanted addressed; preparation of sermons based on those concerns and summarizing feedback received by several means. Chapter 1 defines the subject of prayer and proves that the Bible is not only an infallible divine revelation of God's plan of redemption, but also a record of the invaluable inspirational prayers of Jesus Christ. Chapter 2 begins with the birth of the Sudan Interior Mission and substantiates its mission emphasis by prayer in West Africa. Chapter 3 examines hindrances to prevailing prayers and the Nigerian Evangelical Church of West Africa involvement with charismatic movement. Chapter 4 addresses the importance of prayer in mission and biblical imperatives of praying for mission. Prayer strategies for rapid exponential increase of church planting are also included.
