Research about the experience of pastoral discouragement is compiled through interviews with four pastors serving in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A), congregational level.  The divine sense of call is explored along with the dilemma of pastoral discouragement.  The paper identifies five common causes of pastoral discouragement: pastoral roles and ministry expectations, lonerism and unused support mechanisms, ministry as a helping profession, diminished pastoral authority and cultural status, and institutional decline. The project included research of the spiritual discipline of prayer and contemporary spiritual formation methodologies.  This research led to the design, administration, and evaluation of training sessions with the selected leaders.  Training included seven weekly didactic sessions on various dimensions of individual and corporate prayer, with additional assignments between sessions.  Participants assessed assigned readings  and maintained a journal throughout the process with assigned entries germane to the subject matter.  An eighth and final session assessed the participants' mastery of the subject matter and summarized the project material. The intent of this process was to equip the participants to lead the embryonic congregation in the arena of prayer, fostering a culture in which prayer is understood, valued, and practiced. The contemplative prayer exercise program at the Zion Korean United Methodist Church in Carson City, California, showed a positive result after analyzing the pre-program questionnaires, the post-program questionnaires, and the session meetings. The congregation participated in a seven-week course on corporate prayer. Through surveys and a filmed group evaluation, the project director was able to assess the effectiveness of the project. This project taught an approach to couple prayer utilizing the communication skills previously learned in Couple Communication I combined with the Prayer of Examen as a means of reducing defensiveness in couples as they share and pray together about their growing awareness of God. Twelve Christian married couples participated in a twelve week program involving group sessions and homework. This study measured whether there was an increase in marital satisfaction, spiritual well-being and self differentiation. Christians, like non-Christians, are hurting.  These hurts are physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual.  Intimacy with God and his Word, appropriation of the cross, and reliance on the Holy Spirit were taught as the essential dynamics of all healing prayer ministries. Four disciplines informed the model: neurobiology, physiology, psychosocial, and spiritual faith formation.  The model (FPC) was evaluated by an expert panel comprised of two groups: licensed clinicians with training in FP and those with no FP training.  The panel agreed that FPC was developmentally sound. Participants took a quantitative pre-test assessing their level of spiritual strength before receiving training and experience in eight sessions.  Following the training, they took the quantitative post-test, which included qualitative questions.  The project was successful. Participants developed better understanding about the relationship between spiritual vitality, deep wounds, and formational prayer.
