In recent times, the faithful have advocated for better communication of the Word of God from their priests.One pragmatic preacher in recent times is Pope Francis, who has emerged as one of the greatest preachers of the twenty-first century. There is debate about the influence his preaching model may have on the daily engagement of other priests with the faithful. This study seeks to answer this question: Can contemporary parish preachers adopt Pope Francis' preaching model to enhance their proclamation of the gospel? The thesis seeks to test out insights from these two fields with six preachers who were invited to preach at least one homily on a controversial issue. The project consisted of an eight month preaching course that included preaching supervision, coaching, and methodology training. Through the participant's use of reflection papers lessons were gleaned that demonstrate supervision's effectiveness. He utilized focus groups for gathering qualitative data from both priests and parishioners. There are distinct preacher identities, and these can be determined as an outcome of a preaching survey. Data from a survey conducted among priests established three preacher identities: disciple, entertainer, and teacher. The study examines the formation needs for each identity while exploring pedagogics and methods, and presents a model for forming preachers using identity on the foundation that an understanding of preacher identity can result in better preaching.
