The approach is as follows: First, the primary data are gathered through the use of a 'Homiletical Questionnaire' which surveyed 104 Protestant and Roman Catholic homiletics professors.  Second, a primary quantitative analysis of the 16 most popular texts is performed by using a 'Homiletical Scorecard' with 261 headings. By using a semantic differential technique, responses to both metaphorical and propositional language were measured. The function of metaphor is examined in regard to clarity, emotion, beauty, imagination, detail, meaning and appeal. Both the statistical significance and practical significance of this are discussed.  The relationship of analogous language to cerebral specialization and logical positivism is noted. The author researched and validated the centrality of preaching in the Baptist churches and shows that although Baptist theology of Scripture is high, it is characterized by narrowness seen in the use of favorite Scripture themes and biblical books.  He researched Baptist pulpit giants and states their method of text selection of waiting upon the Holy Spirit. This project was an effort to structure such a dialogue within the context of a sound doctrine of ministry.  A theology of ministry was developed and shared in a series of sermons and children's messages.  Dialogues were held to discuss the implications.  The congregation was surveyed before and after the sermon-dialogue series to detect any changes of attitude. When utilized, feedback can also enrich preaching. Following the examination of the components and phases of the process of communication, this dissertation describes the nature and role of feedback in modifying sermon content and delivery, identifies the sources, bases, and forms of acquiring feedback to preaching, and tests and evaluates some methods for acquiring feedback from a small group within a congregational setting.  Included are the procedure followed in organizing the feedback group and the steps in the development and utilization of feedback forms.
