This is personal and communal struggle, made possible by the unfolding miracle of language, regulated by Scripture, and served by the preaching ministry of transformative leaders.Chapter 1 presents Christian life as an open system, oriented toward transformation. Chapter 2 examines paradigm change in theology and presents preaching as a hermeneutical act in which the believing Assembly seeks historical consciousness by reappropriating tradition in the light of a new paradigm. Chapter 3 compares a methodological shift toward historical consciousness and personal responsibility in Roman Catholic social teaching to a more classical emphasis on law in catholic sexual teaching. Catholics approach the preaching act searching for meaning in this incoherent experience of differing methodologies and paradigms.Chapter 4 studies language as an agent of paradigm change, first by setting preaching in the context of oral, written, and electronic culture. Chapter 5 integrates discussion of the ideas of this paper by ten preachers and reflects on the preaching act as an act of choral listening, the importance of the self-definition of the preacher, and the implications of differing paradigms of authority for Christian life and preaching. The project began with the premise that the Bible, and the stories of the lives of the people in it, has often been viewed as an authoritative document within the African-American community.  The project lifted up through preaching various biblical family behavior imperfections and showed the 'presence of God,' as an incentive to move listeners beyond their shame and pain toward wholeness, growth and productivity.  The preaching of family sermons, resulted in a desire for more sermons on biblical families. The project was a test of the 'triangle theory of church growth' which is based upon three interdependent and interrelated principles: spirituality, ministry, preaching/teaching.  These three principles were evaluated by a committee process in relation to selected biblical passages and the ministry context in question.  An outside evaluator analyzed the theory and the committee's work. The methodology used was to review the Fathers' work and preach nine sermons during Advent and Lent using the common lectionary and the work of individual Fathers as it related to a given text and sermon. Four sermons were preached in a worship setting, two deductive and two inductive. Preacher, listener and God must participate. The human understanding of motivation theory is not sufficient to produce transformation without the Spirit of God.  The project examines the historical movements, persuasion and the nature of influence, and some of the major activities of the Spirit of God in the preaching event.  The result is that if one believes that the Spirit of God is so important in the preaching event, how does one teach preaching to seminary students?
