Postmodern authors have noted a significant change in Western culture, affecting world view and specifically denying the existence of an over-arching explanation of reality known as metanarrative. This study employed a qualitative research design interviewing twelve Teaching Elders of the PCA. The findings revealed a strong commitment to the Reformed value that scripture alone is sufficient as a source for the content of sermons. In that context, the Christian church is struggling to renew its voice. This voice must be true to the ancient gospel and yet communicative with postmodern people. No discipline deals more directly with the Christian voice, both prophetic and pastoral, than homiletics. In search of a queer homiletic briefly reviews philosophical influences in church history and the impact of Foucault and Derrida's postmodernism. It explores the arc of liberation theologies leading to Queer Theology and the claims it makes on preaching. Using insights from the field of performance studies, a descriptive examination is given of performance in general, cultural performance, modalities of performance, and a methodology of dialogical performance. The areas of preaching, scripture, doctrine, and ethics are examined as components of the church's cultural performance. As the author recognized a growing spiritual maturity in his own life, he sought to ascertain if and how this was identifiable in the preaching event. The theory guiding this thesis is espoused in The Fully Alive Preacher by Mike Graves, which states 'if we want to become better preachers, we should first consider how we might become deeper persons.' The author found a symbiotic relationship between the spiritual maturity of the preacher and preaching. Therefore, performance of the gospel illuminates the meaning and emotive qualities of the gospel. By introducing newly emerging biblical discipline, Performance Criticism, this thesis seeks to unpack difficult passages in Mark's Gospel. It also explores how Performance Criticism can lead to a new homiletic approach, which the author names Performance Homiletics. Through a few examples of sermons, the author articulates the nature and power of Performance Homiletics. The context is a small suburban Episcopal church beginning a new ministry with their recently arrived priest. In various group feedback sessions, listeners expressed their understanding of how Benedictine values can shape the spiritual life of the church community and become part of its vision. The thesis offers a framework for spiritual renewal of a faith community through
