As a means of facilitating this quest, preaching is also suspect.  The Post-enlightenment fragmentation of facts from values that reduced religion to little more than subjective opinion and elevated science to a place of supreme authority altered the landscape of the church and impacted the nature of preaching. The patient's stories and experiences are valuable resource materials that can be utilized in the preparation and delivery of more effective homilies to the hospital community. In most churches, Sunday homilies do not effectively address the problems of the sick. Most Sunday homilies address the moral, social, economic, and political problems of the healthy members of the churches. This thesis is aimed at improving pastoral care ministry of the sick. This pastoral approach will provide a homiletical guide for preachers, pastors, and chaplains involved in hospital, hospice, and nursing home ministries. In order to test whether the integration of patients' stories in sermons makes a difference in how preaching is received by patients in a hospital setting, three homilies without patients' stories and three with patients' stories were preached to patients. The method of testing was with questionnaires designed to provide opportunities to patients to express how they felt about the homilies. Apart from using questionnaires, face-to-face conversations between the pastoral minister and patients were also provided. Wallace Hamilton an effective deductive preacher so that contemporary preachers may improve the effectiveness of their own preaching. This project also discloses the characteristics of Hamilton's preaching, which would be ineffective for the contemporary preacher. Fred Craddock's inductive preaching method informs my critique of Hamilton. Research for this project includes interviews with those who heard Hamilton preach, analysis of Hamilton's sermons, and feedback from those who listened to sermons by Hamilton and Craddock. The author believes that these generations have been lured away from prophetic ministry and enticed by negative cultural influences.  The cultural influence that is having significant impact is the American culture of consumerism which has appeared in the church as prosperity preaching.  The author interviewed and surveyed the X and Y generations, researched biblical prophets and examined cultural influences. The structure of the doctrine of entire sanctification, which focuses on personal experience, is too grounded in the past experiences of others.  This leaves the preacher to try and bring others into a foreign experience or convince them they really have had the experience the preacher is referring to.  This thesis will provide a fresh metaphor for understanding the doctrine of entire sanctification along with two hermeneutical approaches that will be pivotal for the preacher of doctrine. Conversely, an effectively managed pastoral persona can actually aid in the communication of a message.  This project explores the issue and offers strategies for effectively managing pastoral persona.  The project surveys scholarship on the subject of rhetoric, a study of celebrity preachers, and the results of two focus groups held to explore issues of pastoral persona with mid career pastors and with seminary students.
