The project for the study was an experiment in participatory preaching.  A control group selected from the congregation of the First Baptist Church (Elberton, Georgia) evaluated the effectiveness of four sermons preached at the church.  The sermons were examples of participatory preaching. It examines the use of persuasive techniques in the preaching of the prophets, Jesus, and Paul.  It examines the differences between positive persuasion, manipulation, and propaganda.  It reviews the process of intentional persuasion in preaching.  Two original sermons are presented, not as models, but as attempts to use the intentional processes recommended by the literature.  The sermons were evaluated by the author's congregation and reviewed by a listening group of nine members. A process was developed involving education on the subject of Christian preaching, study groups and survey instruments to gain congregational input prior to preaching, and an evaluative method to be used during and following a sermon.  The process was then initiated and carried out in a congregational setting. The project outlined the result of a biblical and historical literature review and the development of a methodology used to examine local churches in Tucson, Arizona.  The study tested the proposition: there is a positive correlation between preaching and church growth.  The hypothesis of this combined descriptive and quasi-experimental research was: if this proposition is correct then tangible evidence exists that the emphasis of preaching will positively impact growth.  The first objective stated that an examination of the Bible would support the proposition.  A biblical search revealed that there existed a positive correlation between preaching and biblical church growth, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The author found substantial evidence linking the rise and wane of church growth with the emphasis and decline of preaching. The third objective stated that an examination of contemporary churches would support the proposition. These common variables that are repeated in one good preacher after another fall into three major headings: what is said (accuracy, relevance); how it is said (clarity, passion); and who says it (giftedness, credibility). Through the process of 'storyboarding,' a creative brainstorming exercise, these common variables were highlighted.  This led to the creation of an analytical tool that was used to evaluate sermons from 8 different preachers from various denominational backgrounds.  The analytical tool served to verify the effectiveness of those preachers who participated in the study.
