The method of stimulating this growth consisted in the formation of two groups.  The 'growth group' involved individuals whom the project director assisted in growth by teaching skills in reflective listening so as to improve their ability in gleaning applicable information from sermons. The plan included: identifying personal problems among attenders through an initial churchwide survey; addressing the problems in six sermons; evaluating the success of the attempt to address the problems by means of a weekly written survey, a sermon discussion group, and a second churchwide survey.  A slight improvement in addressing problems through sermons was made. More improvement was noted in relevance than in effectiveness. Fifty-three volunteers of Venice Bible Church, (Venice, Florida) critiqued eleven sermons.  The listeners' learning styles were assessed using the Gregorc Style Delineator.  Four preaching styles were designed to correspond to the four dominant learning styles. She concludes that teachers of women preachers can be most effective when they take into account the unique ways that women grow and learn. Research for this thesis has focused on writings that develop the notion of the centrality of community, and especially how the concept of community has an impact on the process of preaching.  The preacher is seen as one who is set in the midst of community, in contrast to one who is set apart from the community.  The preacher speaks, not to the congregation, but for them, articulating their deepest faith affirmations. In this thesis it is emphasized that the work of the Holy Spirit in preaching is the foundation to make preaching possible.  One of the major problems in preaching is its dryness and weakness, for preaching deals with dry biblical exegesis on the cognitive level rather than spiritual crisis.  This project combines practical suggestions for more effective and powerful preaching, supported by the Holy Spirit, with an understanding from perspectives based on biblical understanding on the work of the Holy Spirit in preaching and in writings of John Wesley and Karl Barth.  The major work of the Holy Spirit in preaching is to make the objective reality of revelation the subjective reality; consequently, preachers and audiences come to believe the text is written for them and overcome the purely cognitive level in preaching. The Kosin denomination follows Calvin's Reformed faith.  Thus, the Kosin denomination pulpit tends to be more oriented toward addressing the divine goal of God in preaching than in addressing the human goals.  There needs to be a balance between these two trends in preaching.  Authentic preaching means combining divine and human goals.
