As the author recognized a growing spiritual maturity in his own life, he sought to ascertain if and how this was identifiable in the preaching event. The theory guiding this thesis is espoused in The Fully Alive Preacher by Mike Graves, which states 'if we want to become better preachers, we should first consider how we might become deeper persons.' The author found a symbiotic relationship between the spiritual maturity of the preacher and preaching. Consumer culture tempts Christians to worship an idolatrous world of stuff. The preacher is called to speak a word of hope and offer strategies to face this modern giant.This project defines consumer culture, its affects on the health, environment, and debt load. Homiletical strategies are identified to expose its temptations then 'counter-script,' providing the listener biblical and theological resources to imagine a different way of spending time and resources. It reviews three congregations' attempts at confronting consumer temptations from the pulpit. The same principles used in a preaching handbook for furloughing missionaries are applicable to missionaries during deputation (support team building). Missionaries are afforded tremendous opportunities as they are given the preaching hour in a local church. Benedictine values of stability, obedience and conversion are interpreted for a church community. The context is a small suburban Episcopal church beginning a new ministry with their recently arrived priest. In various group feedback sessions, listeners expressed their understanding of how Benedictine values can shape the spiritual life of the church community and become part of its vision.
