The legitimacy of humor from a theological standpoint is examined and established. Further, the value of humor as a tool in communication is explored and explained. A theological rationale for humor in preaching is provided in this thesis. Humor's use in preaching is validated by its presence in creation, in redemption, in revelation, and in the incarnation. Particular attention is given to the existence of humor in the scriptures, and most notably, to Jesus' frequent use of humor in his teaching ministry. This study deals with understanding the basic essence of humor. The nature of what makes something funny is investigated. Also, the beneficial effects of humor, in life generally, and in communication specifically, are thoroughly considered. This project also offers information about how humor can be used appropriately in preaching. Suggestions on developing a humorous disposition and discovering humorous material are included. In addition, instructions on the delivery of humor are offered. A description of the dangers associated with the use of humor in preaching is also addressed in some detail. Overall this thesis asserts that humor is an aid to effective communication that, when used appropriately by preachers, can enhance the impact and influence of their sermons."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130893023182848,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:49.997Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:27:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dc12fa26-5717-4804-a902-51f0eb52371f","accessControl_ssim":["e7b995c3-f8e4-4761-8b8a-cf67908ab27d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Bondage, burden, and blessing: preaching in a culture of affluence"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:41Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:25:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["50ba70be-a9f9-4b42-a787-c7decccd15fc"],"hasLease_ssim":["b78716e7-fb6e-4b02-b265-2eb8c6a1ec0f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Morris J Niedenthal"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy V Olson"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Preaching","Wealth--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis deals with the theological and homiletical challenges of preaching in an affluent congregation on economic issues like materialism, greed, and giving. It begins by identifying the problem of preachers being ill-equipped and under-prepared for the task of preaching by their formal theological education. More specifically, classical theological education addresses preaching to specific target audiences on only a limited basis. The perspective of this project is that specifically focused preaching enhances the effectiveness of communication. In addition, little has been written and taught regarding preaching to older adults, as opposed to younger generations. Preaching must address the reality that the population of the United States is growing older. This thesis addresses ways to communicate biblical truths to aging adults more effectively. It surveys contemporary literature which addresses issues relevant to the elderly. The project also includes a self-study for preachers who preach regularly, exploring specific themes for preaching, unique characteristics of older adults, ways in which the Bible addresses particular issues faced by older adults, and ways in which preachers can use more inclusive language in the wording of the sermon. Finally, this thesis contains a lesson plan for teaching one particular aspect of homiletics."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131593560031232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:49:58.082Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:51:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:57:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ae978742-9986-40fc-9974-d481224a81a8","accessControl_ssim":["c76b1a4e-b9fb-4dcb-a7fe-e231e40b6781"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching for success: the results a preacher can realistically expect through the faithful preaching of God's Word"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:51:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:10:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e927d050-dd1e-483e-bbb9-e984d6e4ab56"],"hasLease_ssim":["db25517b-6cd7-42e0-a851-dedf4636bfa9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Sid Buzzell","Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jacob DeVries"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Expository preaching","Word of God (Christian theology)","Evangelicalism","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The pulpit stands center stage in most evangelical churches. Most preachers desire to be successful in their pulpit ministry yet many question whether or not it is. The purpose of this thesis is to define successful preaching and list the results a preacher can realistically expect through the faithful preaching of God's Word. The basis of this thesis is the nature and authority of the Word of God. The author will posit that the Bible, the sixty-six books of the Christian canon, is the authoritative Word of God and, therefore, is powerfully effective to bring about change and growth in the lives of the listeners. The effective power of God's Word is, however, affected by three variables: the sovereignty of God, listener response, and the message preached. While the preacher cannot control either the sovereignty of God nor listener response, he is able to remove the obstacles to the faithful and effective preaching of God's Word. This thesis begins by laying the theological foundation for building a case for success in preaching: the nature and authority of both God's Word written and God's Word preached. Next, the vast field of homiletical literature will be explored in order to define the criteria that can be used to the purpose and process of a preaching groups that was formed to encourage successful preaching. This thesis ends with the author's findings, conclusions, and recommendations for maximizing the results a preacher can realistically expect from the faithful preaching of God's Word."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132055053008896,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:57:18.196Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:50:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:00:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"67c92844-89fc-4a8e-873f-502fab14ca58","accessControl_ssim":["b801b5cc-8ccc-4569-9d3c-8cf725b41825"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Mentoring tools for beginning preachers enrolled in the Eastern Union Bible College in Columbus Ohio"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:50:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:10:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["677d6b09-2f27-4638-becf-a91f7689ed44"],"hasLease_ssim":["8be1b162-e88b-4baf-8d41-f5f7f704daa1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Terry Thomas","Ricky A Woods"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Harold A Hudson"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Eastern Union Bible College (Columbus, Ohio)","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["My context is the Eastern Union Bible College in Columbus Ohio. A sermon series on the doctrine of covenant may positively influence the practice of the discipline of prayer in the lives of those who seek a deeper walk with God. The researcher chose to preach this series in the genre of first person biblical characters. This study describes how the researcher presented a sermon series to a local church congregation utilizing responses from the congregation and a small group to measure changes, if any, in cognitive and/or behavioral practices in their practice of prayer. This is an evaluation study in the experimental mode which uses a pre- and post-test design. Two procedures were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. 1. A qualitative approach involved the use of interview, anecdotes taken from informal conversation, and comments by the participants in the small group. 2. A quantitative approach was utilized which involved the structure of prayer scale developed by Luckow, Ladd, Spilka, McIntosh, Parks, \u0026 Laforett. This scale provided a measure of the practice of prayer."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133885622386688,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:26:23.963Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:05:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:46:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c79ee749-5602-4699-b90d-09b66a378d67","accessControl_ssim":["7fbebd12-2ee9-4697-816e-8e6aef2e3593"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'Communication theory and preaching': a project to determine preferences of selected communication theories in the preaching event at First Baptist Church of New Tazewell, Tennessee"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:05:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:51:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b7ace3c3-38e5-42a0-85d2-2a6c00b07606"],"hasLease_ssim":["96e5b218-25d6-4b5b-a22c-dfc10e5c1c83"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Beeson Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["C Richard Wells"],"year_tesim":["1997"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Rickey Garner"],"publisher_tesim":["Beeson Divinity School of Samford University"],"subject_tesim":["Rhetoric","Baptist","Preaching","Communication"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The objective of this ministry project was to determine a listening preference of First Baptist Church, New Tazewell, Tennessee toward the three communicating theories of Classical Rhetoric, Contemporary Rhetoric, and Casual Process in the preaching event.
