It is an encouragement to pastors to include geographical, historical, and archaeological material, theological themes, and contemporary issues, in the planning for their adult teaching to enhance their preaching. The first part of the project is the creation of a student workbook as an illustration of an adult teaching curriculum. Genesis 11:30-25:10 serves as the model for the workbook entitled 'Rejoicing In New Beginnings.' Chapter one 'Traveling with God' is a review of appropriate geographical conditions, the historical background, and life settings of Abraham and Sarah. Chapter two, 'Friends with God, 'is a study of the theological themes from the passages. Chapter three, 'Living Everyday with God, 'is an examination of the contemporary faith and life issues which can be identified from the Abraham and Sarah narrative. Each chapter is designed to be one twelve week quarter of Sunday School lessons. The workbook serves as resource material of the class, but it also is designed to prompt the students to reflect on the data which has been presented. The second part of the project is a methodology explaining how a series of sermons can be produced using the classroom experience and material. The section, 'In the Study,' is a description of the process of selecting passages, planning the curriculum, and preparing the workbook. The unit, 'In the Classroom,' offers some thoughts about the presentation of the workbook, but primarily emphasizes the need for the pastor to dialogue with the class and then retrieve the essence of those issues for direction in sermon preparation. The third of this group, 'From the Pulpit,' sets forth the practice of making sermons from the workbook and the classroom interactions."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135397236965376,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:25.550Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:48:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"991f26d2-5a47-45ea-a0db-a68f99140478","accessControl_ssim":["03c96908-de48-46ed-8b1a-d5e5b73d5e6a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching with the Heidelberg Catechism today"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:48:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:36:35Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d6ebb939-9f4e-4493-bc5b-b3f4f8f1957c"],"hasLease_ssim":["f4d7f1a2-ffb7-4f81-a4ef-a9d7246d26bd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The practice of catechetical preaching is now in decline, both in quality and quantity.Chapter Two deals with the problems of catechetical preaching. It is often repetitious from year to year and therefore boring. Preachers sometimes brings theological presuppositions to their preaching that are different from the views expressed by the Heidelberg Catechism. Chapter Three gives us reasons why catechetical preaching can still be useful and relevant. The Heidelberg Catechism provides us with a useful framework of thought and confession. Its emphasis on the promises of God can be a very effective antidote to legalism and cold orthodoxy. Chapter Four studies and critiques the approaches to catechetical preaching of Peter Y. DeJong, the Dutch Pietists, Heinrich Ott, Eugene Heideman, Shinji Masuda, and Paul Calvin Zylstra.Chapter Five explores ways in which the Heidelberg Catechism can be preached with Scripture texts so that catechetical preaching will be, at the same time, valid and faithful exegesis of the chosen text and useful exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism.A method is discussed by which a non-traditional congregation can be introduced to catechetical preaching and the Catechism presented as a reminder of what the Bible teaches."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135620338286592,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:58.317Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:47:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c7230832-2adc-43bf-a766-356555ef9554","accessControl_ssim":["0010d742-5bc5-4897-b7e3-5171bb672b7f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching : an essential component in a long pastorate"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:47:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:51:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8183df22-bbb9-49ee-a9d1-23a30ac186b1"],"hasLease_ssim":["4b1b3bd9-fb45-4a36-8e94-d5dbee60b389"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles Edward van Engen","David P Breen"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The emphasis of the chapter is on the influences and results of anti-intellectualism in the theological milieu of a holiness/fundamental radition.Chapter Two focuses on selected hermeneutical concepts that should be addressed if one is to have an enlarging view of Scripture and its use in preaching. The inter-relationships of the terms hermeneutics, exegesis and biblical preaching are discussed. A clearer understanding of the inspiration of Scripture is examined from a cultural-historical point of view. And, the Bible's statement of its own inspiration is approached through a presentation of II Timothy 3:16.Chapter Three is concerned with the selection and use of research aids for biblical preaching. Guidelines are offered for selecting commentaries. Principles to follow in using commentaries and other research aids are also included. The use of metaphor as an aid to communication is emphasized.Chapter Two examines communication in terms of the hearers. Audience analysis, cultural influences, and the hearer's perception of the world are cited as information areas the preacher will want to consider when preparing the sermon. The use of metaphor to help build meaningful relationships is discussed.Chapter Three focuses on metaphor as an aid to preaching. A Biblical basis for the use of figures of speech in preaching is studied. Metaphor is defined by its function and value for illustrating sermons. Types and sources of metaphors are explored. Practical concerns, such as the placement and quantity of metaphors in a sermon, conclude the chapter.Chapter Four is concerned with the evaluation of metaphors and guidelines for their use in preaching. At the conclusion of a sermon, immediate feedback is useful for measuring the clarity of a metaphor, but long-term feedback is also necessary to evaluate the appropriateness of the metaphors to the hearers by observing the assimilation of the metaphors into their life and vocabulary. Drawing upon the Psychology of Meaning and the Prologue to the Fourth Gospel, this thesis project developed and tested a preaching methodology to respond to the significant increase in anxiety in the Diocese of Metuchen, New Jersey, by addressing the sense of meaninglessness that often causes or aggravates anxiety. Chapter 1 presents the project’s genesis, its ministerial context, and the magnitude of the problem it seeks to address. An interdisciplinary framework built upon the Psychology of Meaning and Dr. Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy in Chapter 2 lays the groundwork for the highly sacramental christology of meaning rooted in Jesus Christ as Logos that emerges as the project’s theological framework in Chapter 3. These concepts find natural allies in the dialectical and sacramental theological imaginations and the undeniably Scriptural genre of testimony, the project’s homiletic foundations presented in Chapter 4. A preached retreat, held on November 13, 2021, served as the project’s ministerial intervention and tested its hypothesis before twenty-one adults living in the Diocese of Metuchen who experience anxiety. Chapter 5 discusses the retreat in detail and the qualitative and quantitative data obtained through the insider, outsider, researcher multiple data-collection technique used in the intervention. These data, discussed in Chapter 6, support the hypothesis that preaching meaning in Jesus Christ, the Logos, offers a pastoral response to the significant increase in anxiety by countering the sense of meaninglessness often associated with this condition. They also provide fertile ground for further research and inspire the future uses of the findings and observations that conclude this work."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130269978198016,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:28:55.816Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:44:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:23:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b29bfc90-d833-4b93-87ce-aaa306b1673b","accessControl_ssim":["4b3597da-3c69-4068-b655-fed19a5dd5a5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Does God Call Laypeople to Preach in their Local Church? Through this field project, these individuals were identified, equipped, and presented with opportunities to preach God’s word in their own setting. The two foci of calling and preaching were essential to answer the research question. Members of Massey Place Community Church interested in learning to preach were invited to participate in the study. Seven people responded. A six-week introductory course was conducted to teach about calling and how to prepare and preach a biblically-based sermon. We found that people were being called to preach, and four of the seven actively engaged as lay preachers. The question at the heart of this research project, “could lay people preach effectively in the Sunday morning service?”, was answered in the affirmative; there were laypeople that God called into the role of occasionally speaking from the pulpit. Further to that, this significantly benefited the life and growth of the church and positively impacted the individuals who preached."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133710364442624,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:23:36.824Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"af44f849-8e3a-4564-88f5-1e196e0ec496","accessControl_ssim":["36b0625d-d0a6-4983-8b77-e0b58c54aa6f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral theology, imagination, and formation in preaching seminarians at Church on the Hill"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:11:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5ef26125-b31c-4dee-8be4-d732c6058add"],"hasLease_ssim":["408d0699-f794-4bce-8fed-377d0d72a4ea"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Chuck DeGroat"],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Such a pastoral theology is grounded in a classical pastoral theology yet is open and innovative through its cultivation and practice of pastoral imagination. After explicating pastoral theology and pastoral imagination and understanding them more deeply through the life and work of Lesslie Newbigin, the paper takes a turn from pastoral theology to pastoral formation. The second half of the paper considers how the formation of pastors through seminary education and field education.
