Through the use of a pre-test and post-test survey, this project quantitatively examined the effectiveness of long-term sermon planning to effect spiritual growth. The paper begins by introducing and defining the practice of homiletical plagiarism. The definition is enhanced by examining the elusive, peculiar, prolific and destructive nature of appropriating sermon material without proper acknowledgment. The thesis question is then examined by consulting the contemporary perspectives on pulpit plagiarism. The question is measured against the moral law of God found in scripture and particularly the last three commands of the Decalogue. The preacher needs to analyze the ministerial context and invite the congregation to share their concerns, interests and questions about preaching. It suggests that the preacher should withdraw his/her controlling power over the congregation so that the laity can work together with the preacher by sharing the ministry, including preaching. Inspiration is drawn from two Baptist proponents of the Social Gospel, Walter Rauschenbusch and Tommy Douglas. Eight sermons were presented in a Canadian Baptist congregation. The sermons tested strategies for preaching three aspects of God's reign: kingdom present, kingdom challenge and kingdom hope. The metanarrative of the kingdom holds potential for bringing together false divisions that have developed in the church. Six sermons on personal relationship with God, uniqueness in Christ, commitment to the church, and hope for the future of the church, were prepared and preached. The select members were given evaluations to determine the extent to which they perceived these sermons to effect specific aspects of spiritual formation. Preaching a lament opens listeners to deal with the real issues that burden them.  This thesis proposes specifically the reclaiming of the psalms of lament in preaching following the homiletic design for celebration of Frank Thomas.  With this integration the preacher is both the leader of lament and celebrant of God's presence. Drawing upon ritual theory and the work of Augusto Boal and his Theatre of the Oppressed, the author has presented sermons incorporating embedded ritualization inviting people to a transformative experience of God. Feedback to these sermons was solicited in order to measure the effectiveness of the embedded ritualization in opening the listeners to an experience of God.
