The underlying conviction of this thesis--that listeners are always co-creators of meaning along with the preacher in any sermon event--is based upon data collected during a three-year preaching project, and upon the work of a number of contemporary homileticians. The main thesis builds on the work of Fred Craddock who viewed the purpose of the sermon as 'getting something heard.' She preached often on the subject, featuring stories of transformation in life through forgiving. Some of the people were teary-eyed, a few felt energized, and several faces were radiant--responses indicating that a redemptive transformation took place in peoples' lives. The author assumes that the dynamics inherent in narrative preaching is instrumental in bringing about these responses that can generate hope.
