This project endeavors to determine if there is a biblical paradigm that could help preaching provide an effective response in order to effect a hearing of the gospel in today's world. Since the Church's postmodern context directly connects with the paradigm of exilic/post-exilic thinking, strategies for interpretation of the Word of God related to that paradigm can influence effective preaching that remains faithful. This project focuses on one White pastor's Lenten preaching series against White racism with a White Presbyterian PC(USA) congregation. The purpose was to cause transformation within the congregation resulting in observable changes toward undoing racism. A preacher needs to be grounded in the following three areas to preach God's living Word effectively: knowledge of scripture, a holistic spirituality, and love for the local community. The theme of resurrection is explored from the vantage-point of those who first encountered it, Jesus' disciples and the early Christian communities, and then from the perspective of twentieth century liberation theology.  Knowing a community in which an itinerant preaches is resurrection preaching. The author proposes a blending of two approaches to preaching: preaching as celebration and preaching as conversation.  Ten sermons were preached using a 'celebrative' design modified by 'conversational' concerns.  Responses were solicited through open forum times as well as through a written feedback form. In general, sermons necessitate interpretation, explanation, and application.  In order to accomplish these things without adding didactic components to sermons which are presented as stories or dramas, the preacher must expand the text's events an characterization. This process, described in the thesis, is an exercise in poetic license. He examined his own perceptions toward other preachers' self-disclosure by listening and evaluating twenty-five messages. He used self-disclosing stories and had a reflection group evaluate both self-disclosing and non-self-disclosing messages. The results were compared to a larger sample which evaluated one self-disclosing and one non-self-disclosing message. When people are stressed it is important to give back to everyday life its sacredness. The author pays attention to the meaning of metaphor and narrative in relation to preaching and daily life. Metaphors and stories, fiction, help the preacher to construct a new world. Story has the power to affect. With the help of story we interpret and form reality. One of the conclusions is that it is important to be aware of the closure of the sermon. How should a preacher know when he or she shall stop? This is a speech act spoken by Jesus in order to effect healing in the story. My beginning thesis was that when the preacher's exegetical, interpretive and homiletic methods are informed by a combination of speech act theory, principles of oral storytelling and issues of social stress, the congregation can experience a kind of healing at identifiable moments in the sermon.  One significant finding for the moment of holy utterance in the sermon is that repeating the holy utterance at different moments of the direct address to the congregation, etc. creates proper space to allow for the congregation to experience holy utterance.  My more significant discovery is that holy utterance as proclamation that heals is a paradigm for all preaching. This is important to the field of homiletics for three reasons.  First, this thesis presents an exploration of preaching that is more consistent with our post-modern world.  Second, it seeks to bring together some of recent homiletical thought into a homiletical art form.
