Through comparing life-issues identified by church members with those identified by members of the community who called the police for help, the author exposed issues the preacher would be unaware of unless his or her contact goes beyond the church. Indicative preaching encourages a forthright, declarative sermon presentation that allows for clarity and theological reflection all at the same time.  In this theory the function of the herald (kerygma) is to proclaim more than to exhort.  Proclamation allows room for the individual listener to reflect, integrate, and respond to the Good News. Indicative preaching thus seeks to draw people into an intimate encounter with the Almighty, without rousing internal defense mechanisms that block communication.  In this approach to homiletics it becomes an exegetical expectation for the preacher to maintain the integrity of the biblical literature, including its mode.  This means adapting sermon preparation to reflect the true nature of the text. The project also presents guidelines for indicative preaching for the parish pastor and a series of six sermons. Work with the spiritual director, the personal reflection time each day, the forming of the sermon, and the evaluation by a parish advisory committee were recorded in a daily journal.  The author read to inform himself of spiritual direction and how present-day Christian scholars understand the role of spiritual direction.  The result of the study is that the author has made a change in his sermon preparation. The faithful preaching of a theology of the cross communicates God's saving grace for all.  This study underscores the reality that Scripture is read and interpreted on the basis of lived experiences both as individuals and as persons in community. Using excerpts from their sermons and interviews with the two men the author explored the unique ways in which they use the best of current literature and theology as well as life itself to engage their listeners in an existential encounter with the message of the gospel. An 'interpretative context' is present whenever persons attempt to communicate.  Therefore, preaching is affected by the interpretative contexts of both preacher and hearer. A 'gap' may exist that can impede communication between persons whose interpretative contexts are sufficiently different.  This project examined the contextual nature of preaching.  Study of biblical texts, prior to their development in sermons, afforded pastors and congregations opportunity to become aware of contextual gaps.  A sermon review process allowed for evaluation of the gap-bridging process. The project provided a formal structure for mutual sharing between clergy and laity, with the intent of meeting felt needs within the congregation.  The methodology involved a survey of the congregation to surface needs, the training of a group of people to give feedback to the preacher, and discussion to prepare sermons and to evaluate their effectiveness. A diagnosis of the problem was given from psychological, emotional, theological, and biblical perspectives.  A theology and methodology was presented showing why that issue was a focus for an act of ministry.  A sermon series was presented dealing with the themes of abandonment, lostness, and hope.  Evaluation was done by a peer group using written-response questionnaires and by the chapel community using scale-type questionnaires.
