The project enlists church members in intentional involvement with sermons before, during, and after worship, individually and in groups. Participants prepare for a sermon, focus their listening with questions during the sermon, respond to the sermon in an experiential rather than homiletically critical way in small groups meeting with the preacher, and continue consideration of the sermon in journal questions for several days afterward. The three areas of study were: 1) 'Developing Guidelines for the Preacher's View of His Role in the Pulpit'; 2) 'An Analysis of Three Dominant Preaching Styles Found in Western Culture'; and 3) 'Alan Monroe's Motivated Sequence as a Preaching Paradigm'.  This study used the quasi-experimental method of research with a randomized control group pre-test and post-test design. It uses a didactic sermon form and employs the control group method of research.  The project shows that stating the sermon's intended main point in a propositional sentence in the first paragraph positively influences the effectiveness of some sermons.  A secondary finding is that some illustrative material significantly influences sermon effectiveness. The study consists of a review of pertinent literature in the field of preaching, an examination of taped and published sermons, interviews with colleagues and four sessions with a committee of laypersons.  The study results in a set of guidelines for pastors on the use of personal material in sermons.  A committee of laypersons evaluates the initial guidelines with respect to clarity, organization and face validity. The need was addressed through Bible study, fellowship, six evangelistic worship and preaching services, congregational response and evaluation, the response of a working committee of six persons, evaluation and critical reflection with the preacher.  The content of the messages preached emphasized the non-negotiable essentials of the Christian message as the kerygma for the context.  The thesis of the project was that kerygmatic preaching plays a central role in the local church's ministry of leading people to the experiential relationship with God in Christ by the Holy Spirit. The men's responses, decisions and demands for such preaching on Sunday morning showed the necessity for such preaching. Three such theological presuppositions are isolated.  The five novels were read and discussed by a group of laypersons who had difficulty in perceiving Updike's theological intent.  The study concludes that while the works of Updike help provide meaning for preaching, they are no panacea for the preaching task.
