The approach of this study is to use the preaching charge of the Apostle Paul to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:1-5 as the basic outline of study. The author examines the task of application from a historical, theological, and theoretical standpoint.  The focus of the study is twenty-four pastors from the Evangelical Free Church of America.  The author uses a content analysis approach to study the unique methods of application used by John Broadus, G Campbell Morgan, D Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and Charles Swindoll. Twelve methods of application are isolated from these four homileticians to develop a Methods of Application Self-Reporting Inventory. They can be powerful aids in preaching if and only if they are kept in a supporting role and do not overpower the sermon.  The project explores ways of realizing the power of illustrations while avoiding their dangers.  It reviews sources for illustrations and methods of filing them.  Sermons that use these ideals are evaluated by a representative group of parishioners.
