The author studied the scientific data supplying the plot and details of the story.  She compared and contrasted several contemporary cosmologies.  She described several biblical themes supporting a cosmically conscious hermeneutic.  After analyzing the needs reported by two focus groups of preachers she developed a series of hermeneutical exercises for the preacher.  She described and evaluated a workshop in which participants used these exercises in preparing their preaching. The theological foundation for this thesis is based on a study of various biblical characters and biblical teachings to specifically observe how God identifies with the hearers of his message. A review of available literature and interviews with experts revealed significant agreement on the pervasive influence of television on the lives of Canadians. The focus of this thesis is not on the content of television but the medium of television. This thesis attempts to zero in on why television is so successful at attracting hours of weekly attention from so many Canadians. It goes on from there to suggest what preachers can do to better attract the attention of their congregations in order to better communicate biblical truth. The findings, from this research, were then put to the test by means of a survey. Nineteen people were selected because of their expertise and surveyed to confirm the findings in the literature. They were specifically asked how preachers can adapt their preaching methods to better identify with their television-saturated audiences. The material was specifically designed to train laymen at Trinity Baptist Church in Ocala, Florida where the writer is pastor. It is adaptable, however. One of the major goals of the curriculum was to be more practical than technical. This thesis is written out of the conviction that preaching has fallen on difficult times in a secular, media-saturated society. Nevertheless, the preaching task remains the primary means of proclaiming God's message to the world. The church must do a better job of utilizing lay people in the task of proclamation and train them to teach and apply God's Word in a relevant and interesting way. This two hour, ten session curriculum provides a workable tool to meet this need. The emphasis is expository preaching evolving from inductive Bible study. Theological and biblical foundations are given in support of expository preaching. A literature review is included to support the important elements related to the study and preparation of a biblical message and to provide further information and resources for trainers who might use these materials. Using an adult learner model for the instructional process, the seminar is developed to help participants discover and apply several key skills for effective communication. These skills include: creating urgency in preaching, thinking creatively, connecting with an audience, observing rules of oral clarity, developing and using effective illustrations, learning to preach without notes, and communicating powerfully and persuasively through the mastery of various vocal and visual variables. The opening chapter of this thesis identifies the need for skilled Christian communicators in light of a media saturated society. The second chapter reflects theologically on the task of preaching, particularly highlighting the centrality of preaching in the redemptive work of God. A literature review is offered in chapter three analyzing published works in the area of adult learning and conducting workshops and seminars. This thesis-project proposes that novice pastors can become better communicators through mentoring relationships with seasoned preachers. When these relationships are not possible in a pastor's ministry setting, then distance sermon coaching--using telephone, e-mail, cassette tapes--can help pastors continue to improve homiletical skills. The project provides the theological and theoretical background for such an approach. The author presents his personal experiment with distance sermon coaching in the form of an article for publication, an manual for sermon coaches, and an evaluation from those
