Chapter one begins by examining the challenges that postmodern culture poses to preaching.  Chapter two defines postmodernism in three distinct but separate ways.  Chapter three uncovers the mood of postmodern culture and how postmodernism is, in many ways, an existential reaction to the downsides of modernity.  Chapter four focuses on discovering how America hears the gospel. understanding this is essential because it provides preachers with ample feedback on how listeners perceive the gospel.  Chapter five uses the metaphor of Greek mythology's Trojan Horse to anchor the concept that every culture possesses elements which function as barriers to the gospel.  Chapter six identifies elements within the culture which are user-friendly to the gospel. Chapter seven looks at oratorical and cultural factors which make messages stick to listener consciousness. Chapters eight and nine address the personal traits preachers must have to make a difference in a postmodern setting. The research examines the difference between accommodation and adaptation, analyzes the extent to which the preacher proclaims the word of God and/or persuades the congregation to respond to the word, and explores the rhetorical strategies of identification and argumentation. The project describes interviews with ten preachers to identify ways they prepare and deliver the sermon in multiple settings from the same text. A sermon evaluation form was developed through research and consultation with Hershael York, Professor of Christian Preaching at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.  Six sermons were preached and then evaluated by the project director, eight congregational evaluators and four peer evaluators. The program took a group of like-minded participants through a ten-month course that introduced them to ten key qualities of effective preaching as they relate to postmodernism. The author utilized Vyhmeister's Quality research papers, chapter 13, to create a 'Program development model' as a form of research. The event included coordinated Sunday school classes, morning worship, and Bible study, all based on the lectionary passages for Epiphany. Research included an investigation of acting techniques, observation of videotaped sermons, engagement with a Parish Project Group who assisted in the preparation and critique of sermons, and feedback achieved through questionnaires and group discussions. The psycho-physical nature of public performance can be described by four terms--atmosphere, connection, concentration, radiation.
