He developed a 'system' that helped actors perform in an authentic and truthful way. The author examined how Stanislavski's observations can be applied to preaching preparation. Five key areas were applied in the study; personal and corporate observation, using the 'circles of attention', deep study of texts used when preparing to preach, relaxation and authentic personal communication. The fifth element applied specific Stanislavskian terms - superobjective, bit and through-flow - in the construction of the homily. The first chapter makes a case that a womanist hermeneutic can be used by preachers who are not black women. It is argued that effective preachers need tools that give them access to intersections of race, class, and gender for the sake of the preaching life. Preachers will be challenged to discern a theology of preaching to guide the use of any hermeneutic. The second chapter introduces preachers to womanist theology. The chapter begins with the origins of womanist theology in black and feminist theologies. A review of first, second, and third wave womanist contributions is highlighted. Finally, preachers will explore analysis of how non-black women are using methodologies of race, gender, and class. The third chapter moves us toward a womanist hermeneutic for preaching. A variety of styles of womanist interpretive criteria are presented.  Womanist strategies of reading and interrogating biblical texts are presented and each strategy is illustrated with a biblical text. The fourth chapter and the appendices share the testing method and results of the project. Assessment data is presented along with workshop participants' feedback and reflections. The gathered evidence affirms that all preachers can use a womanist hermeneutic."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130093880344576,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:07.876Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:55:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:46:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bbe37b96-4f3b-401f-85ff-f3a0ffbeb5d9","accessControl_ssim":["c4fe668c-2f1a-4d76-8f2f-a199562c0082"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Field sermons: a study in extemporaneous preaching effected without the regular tools of preparation and delivery"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:55:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:32:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c8df56ac-87ba-49ea-9550-326117a694ff"],"hasLease_ssim":["dd96bd57-e358-4474-ad5a-8ee2f4508fe7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Stephen Estock"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert N Burns"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Military chaplains","Church work with military personnel","Preaching--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to explore how military chaplains preach sermons to personnel within the field environment, with a particular focus on overcoming the challenges faced without the regular tools of preparation and delivery. A literature review was conducted that centered on the methods of preparation and delivery of sermons that would be beneficial to chaplains in the field. The study followed a qualitative research method, utilizing semi-structured interviews with six chaplains, analyzed in a constant comparative method. The research found that chaplains delivered their sermons extemporaneously, often without notes, and utilized oral methods of preparation grounded upon their own personal devotions and prayer. This study concludes that chaplains need to avail themselves of the techniques and practices of extemporaneous preaching without notes, to include an oral method of preparation in order to preach effectively in the field."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131376151429120,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:46:30.745Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:54:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:44:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e76c8ef1-aea0-4ea6-b2fb-45f9db52cfe2","accessControl_ssim":["96d08f79-c8be-4deb-9c15-6c416dfd57a3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching as a catalyst for moving a congregation from fear to joy"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:54:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:45:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4df53249-81f3-42ae-bec6-44fe267582a4"],"hasLease_ssim":["f854fe08-a0ba-4e74-8a62-11dfe4700d9c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gennifer Benjamin Brooks"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Patricia L Bruner"],"publisher_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Preaching--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Joy,a fruit of the Spirit, is substantially lacking in many worshipers today. The author of this paper argues that preaching can be a catalyst for moving a congregation from fear to joy. Preachers have the opportunity to proclaim the Word of God so that through the power of the Holy Spirit transformation occurs and faith is deepened. Preaching that intentionally focuses on moving the hearers from fear to joy, using different genres that promote a joyful type of sermon does produce a response indicative of less fear and more joyful living evidenced by the actions/words of the hearers."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["fc8e637d-6b92-421f-936e-4844dc981265"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135040913014784,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:44:45.734Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Dietra W Baker","hits":1,"label":"Dietra W Baker"},{"value":"Patricia L Bruner","hits":1,"label":"Patricia L Bruner"},{"value":"Robert N Burns","hits":1,"label":"Robert N Burns"},{"value":"Shane Christopher Crombie","hits":1,"label":"Shane Christopher Crombie"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Preaching--Study and teaching","hits":4,"label":"Preaching--Study and teaching"},{"value":"Church work with military personnel","hits":1,"label":"Church work with military personnel"},{"value":"Congregations","hits":1,"label":"Congregations"},{"value":"Military chaplains","hits":1,"label":"Military chaplains"},{"value":"Oral communication","hits":1,"label":"Oral communication"},{"value":"Performing arts","hits":1,"label":"Performing arts"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":4,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Aquinas Institute of Theology","hits":2,"label":"Aquinas Institute of Theology"},{"value":"Covenant Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Covenant Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":4,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2014","hits":4,"label":"2014"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Aquinas Institute of Theology","hits":2,"label":"Aquinas Institute of Theology"},{"value":"Covenant Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Covenant Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Aquinas Institute of Theology","hits":2,"label":"Aquinas Institute of Theology"},{"value":"Covenant Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Covenant Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":4,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":4,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
