The chapter presents the context of the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary as uniquely suited to the aims of the thesis project: developing the Affective Feedback model which relies upon the spiritual experience of the parishioner-listener as the source of feedback to the seminarian-preacher.\r\n\r\nChapter Two presents the central metaphor of a bridge to explain the theoretical frameworks of the Affective Feedback model. The chapter establishes three theological pillars for this bridge: the pneumatology of the Gift of God, the sensus fidei, and Ignatian affective discernment.\r\n\r\nChapter Three explains how listener-oriented preaching serves as the homiletic suspension cables of the Affective Feedback bridge. The practical ecclesiology of Pope Francis, the inductive preaching homiletic of Fred Craddock, and insights into listener relevance from Karla Bellinger manifest the tensile strength that feedback requires.\r\n\r\nChapter Four introduces interdisciplinary wisdom from communication studies in the business world to establish the deck of the Affective Feedback bridge. In conversation with Douglas Stone, Sheila Heen, and Therese Huston, the chapter lays out the practical theology of effective feedback conversations.\r\n\r\nChapter Five details the Affective Feedback model, this thesis project’s ministerial intervention. The chapter gives thick descriptions of the institutional context, participants, structure, and evaluation of the ministerial intervention.\r\n\r\nChapter Six analyzes the limitations and data of the intervention. The analysis examines seminarian interviews and parishioner questionnaires to demonstrate how parishioners moved toward basing their feedback on affective impact and how seminarians grew in appreciation for parishioner’s praise. I utilized the preaching skills enhancement model, andthe sermon series focused on soteriology from the Apostle Paul’s Epistle to theGalatians. The Apostle Paul makes it clear in Galatians that believers must be aware oftheir beliefs so as not to be easily misled by false doctrine. The same concern will bepresented in this project addressing the biblical understanding of salvation at FBCGreensboro and the need for understanding salvation so as not to be easily misled,manipulated, or misinformed on the doctrine.The project developed through diligent research into doctrinal preaching bestpractices and the doctrine of soteriology as found in Galatians. To ensure validity of theproject, a doctrinal sermon expert evaluated the doctrinal sermon form and deliveryeffectiveness, and doctrinal content was evaluated by an expert theologian. Thecongregation provided feedback for each sermon as well. The Word of the holy God is preached and received to make a holy people.  This is a clear Biblical expectation.  Four passages serve to illustrate the consistent focus of scripture on the sanctification of God’s covenant people: Deut. 6, Matt. 5, Eph. 4, and 2 Pet. 1.   The impact of the preaching of John Calvin in Geneva is explored to gauge its impact on the sanctification of the people sitting under the Word.  The influence of the Consistory of Geneva is also examined to determine how they created an expectation of sanctification in that Reformed city.Themes in Walter Marshall’s work, The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification, are summarized to enumerate the various theological strands which are woven together with our sanctification.  Those themes are then used to also discover the degree to which more contemporary sources support a Biblical understanding of the place of sanctification in the Christian life. Lastly such themes are employed to provide a framework in which local churches can increase their emphasis on continual growth in holiness for all of the members of the church.  Ideas for equipping the elders of the church to support this emphasis are detailed. A three-phase process was required to train the small group. The first phase involved allowing a few young adults to discuss the implication of an assigned Bible passage through the inductive Bible study method. The second phase involved training them to preach; the third phase allowed them to preach. For this portfolio, only the first phase was examined. The participants’ involvement included choosing four Bible passages to develop into four sermons. This portfolio has V chapters. Chapter I is the introduction, which gives a general overview of the portfolio while chapter II focuses on the researcher’s personal journey and ministry context. Chapter III is about the author’s philosophy of leadership, which governed and guided his ministry practice; chapter IV examines the field research; and chapter V is the conclusion and implication.The data collection methods used for this research were reflective journaling, participant observation and a survey.
