The director researched the field of application in preaching through reviewing the Bible, searching publications about application in preaching, consulting experts, studying sermon examples, and conducting interviews with experienced preachers. The director reflected on the use of application in preaching to find general functions and principles of application and then developed a series of sermons that demonstrated the use of applications in preaching. The research data were gathered in a United Church of Canada congregation who are primarily comprised of white, upper middle class professionals, many of whom have transferred to the denomination or are new to the faith tradition. The study used a narrative questionnaire of nearly one hundred Reformed pastors throughout the United States and semi-structured interviews with four additional pastors preaching from within a Reformed theological understanding.  The study revealed a heavy reliance on writing in both the preparation and delivery of sermons.  It found that both pastors and congregants deeply care about sermon delivery.  Multiple approaches to this practice were uncovered, influenced by the preacher's habit, personality, theological beliefs, and training.  A high percentage of pastors lacked training in sermon delivery. Disparity exists between expectations and experiences of the laity regarding preaching.  There is discrepancy between the preachers' beliefs regarding their preaching, and how it is received. Worshipers participated in this contemplative approach to reading Scripture during six midweek Lenten services. In three months, Sunday worshipers' sermon ratings increased almost one third (32%); this increase is statistically significant (p = .00). The Lectio Divina-style approach was introduced to a second congregation, but without the experiential participation. The author begins with an exploration of the current wave of immigration, comparing and contrasting it with past immigration history. Through careful attention to and practice of voice, facial expressions, and body movements, a preacher can not only increase the effectiveness of their sermons, but a preacher can also find their own voice in preaching.  This conclusion was reached following two years of work on the performative aspects of preaching. These operating systems are emotion, social interaction, cognitive functioning, physiological learning, and reflective insights. Beyond the presence of these five systems, this project seeks to determine how often these five areas are interrelated in the preaching event.
