The project summarizes and analyzes official documents issued in 1963-1994, and then presents principles, patterns, and behaviors of human communication. From this research the project derives a taxonomy of preaching abilities undergirded by Alverno College's approach to assessment, including a sophisticated listener-response instrument. As attention lapses, content retention decreases, resulting in diminished influence for the sermon.  This project proposes that introduction of tension into a deductive sermon will increase listener content retention.  Five sermons were preached with tension removed and five were preached to the same group with tension added.  Quizzes were administered to determine content retention.  A dependent groups t-test verified the thesis. The project explores texts on preaching to determine the degree to which they see transformation as the purpose of preaching.  Walter Brueggemann and Walter Wink offer insight into what transformation means and how it comes about. Transformative preaching seeks to help the listener move from the destroying way of dominant cultural values to the giving way of covenant rooted in neighbor love.  The preacher evokes transformation with Scriptural images that offer alternative visions of how life can be lived faithfully and meaningfully.  The project develops a model for preaching that will aid in the transformative work of pastoral ministry, and demonstrates this model in three sermons. Six sermons were preached during public worship at Zion-Memorial United Church, Carleton Place, Ontario. Fourteen participants from the congregation responded to a questionnaire.  The qualitative research method 'content analysis' was used to examine data reported by the hearers in sixty-one answers to the questionnaire.  These data tell how the hearers reacted to the sermons, and what they had to say about the message and the 'sender' of the message. The project also explores effects of imaginal preaching on a pastor called to preach faithfully in the midst of change.  Imaginal preaching, when linked with a congregational process of mission development, has transformative power to shape present and future congregational identity and function. Caccioppo in a sermon series on 1 Corinthians. Expository preaching must be persuasive and life-changing, grounded on synthetic, holistic interpretation. The extended value of a series based on a biblical book and that more enduring effect are likely to occur through a cognitive process called 'elaboration.' Since the project was carried out in the uncontrolled environment of a local church, results were tentative and descriptive rather than definitive or predictive.  Three communication factors emerged as significant: trustworthiness, clarity of exposition, and receptor-experience-based terminology. This project supposes that hell is an important topic to address from the pulpit.  The project does not address the question of who is going to hell.  Rather, it focuses on the question, What is hell?  Relevant biblical passages are considered, followed by three basic interpretations of the biblical material: hell as eternal, conscious punishment; hell as ultimate restoration (universal salvation); and hell as ultimate destruction (conditional immortality). The project presents an overview of the history of hell in preaching and a discussion of homiletical method, along with a deductive and inductive sermon on the topic.
