The study surveyed literature relevant to criteria for biblical preaching, textual modalities, and sermon design.  A text-to-sermon case methodology was utilized to evaluate the impact of textual characteristics upon sermon shape and function.  Seeking exposure to diverse scriptural forms, the research utilized New Testament lectionary readings (Year C). Seven persons participated in the nine-week study, the first two being didactic sessions that covered worship and preaching.  They then participated in a Lenten Bible study-seminar of the New Common Lectionary texts. From the study, the author gained insights for the sermon. Utilizing a control group, the author conducted a pre-test and post-test. The method which this project follows is experiential and mystagogical.  The project concludes that significant growth in spiritual formation can and does take place in the worship service. Second, initial responses of long-time members differed significantly from initial resonses of 'beginners in faith'. Third, lay leaders often carry leadership burdens which sometimes hinder their ability to participate fully in worship.  Fourth, the person of the pastor plays a large role in the spiritual formation of the congregation. Communication style was operationalized from literature on media (primary orality, print, electronic), hemispheric lateralization (left-brain), and the Myers-Briggs thinking/feeling temperaments.  Three communication styles were operationalized: discursive, presencursive, and presentational. Recent works on preaching were related to the styles.  The hypothesis: when the communication style of a preaching event resonates with that of the listener, a higher listener satisfaction is reported.  Three sermons were preached using the three communication styles, listener satisfaction ratings were secured, and a statistical analysis of style was computed. The conclusion: communication style preference and resonance do not influence listener satisfaction. The author examines the task of application from a historical, theological, and theoretical standpoint.  The focus of the study is twenty-four pastors from the Evangelical Free Church of America.  The author uses a content analysis approach to study the unique methods of application used by John Broadus, G Campbell Morgan, D Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and Charles Swindoll. Twelve methods of application are isolated from these four homileticians to develop a Methods of Application Self-Reporting Inventory. Sermons that use these ideals are evaluated by a representative group of parishioners. In this project the author presents a contextualized approach to homiletics for the training of Hispanic Protestant seminarians. It studies how the Yoruba culture, arts, traditions, theology, and philosophy affect preaching.  It asks how to use such elements to produce positive results according to Christian ideals.  The study includes eight sessions of field work where participants are exposed to the aspects of Yoruba Christian worship. The project then considers research on Yoruba Christian history, customs and practices.  Many participants returned evaluation forms. He designed research to ascertain those needs and expectations and to find any differences between institutional and non-institutional members.  A review of homiletical literature brought to light methods that preachers can use to become aware of the perspectives and felt needs the congregation brings to the preaching event.  The methods of congregational analysis were applied to the Newbury Park Church.  Information from questionnaires, interviews and sermon groups informed the preparation of eight sermons from Luke which were presented during December 1985 to January 1986.  Feedback then was elicited from the congregation.
