Therefore, the project sought listener response to deductive and inductive preaching in the Pioneer Memorial Church in order to ascertain listener preference for one or the other of these two sermonic methods.  Eight sermons were preached that intentionally alternated between the deductive and inductive methods.  A group of randomly selected listeners reacted to each sermon through a standard evaluative questionnaire.  Based upon their responses, listener preference for deductive and inductive preaching was ascertained.  It was discovered that in numerous instances the listeners demonstrated a wide range of responses and preferences that prevents any categorical advocacy of one method over the other. The researcher designed a curriculum on the canonical approach advocated by Brevard Childs.  Questionnaires tested the clergy and laity before and after the intervention of the approach in preaching. Results indicated that out of 20 questions for the clergy no significant changes took place.  With regard to 10 questions for the laity two showed a significant change. These are that when a preacher and the persons listening to his or her sermon are of the same personlality type the response to the sermon by the listener will be more positive than when their types differ; and when a preacher and those persons listening to his or her sermon are of differing personality types communication is impeded. Data was gathered by using both the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and eight sermons preached with the same congregation during one twelve-week period. The field experiment involved a pre-test of the congregation's understanding of Pauline theology, an intervention of twelve dialogic sermons on six Pauline metaphors, and a post-test to measure the results of the intervening variable.  Dialogic preaching as used in the project combined elements of inductive narrative and indirect preaching. The writer first reported in the thesis various ways a minister could locate sermon illustrations from publications and personal life experiences.  Second, the author presented methods to catalog sermon illustrations for future use; that is, to catalog by subject or lectionary topics. The study reviews both Jungian typology, upon which the MBTI is based, and the instrument itself.
