Corinthians I","Preaching--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This research project uses a strategy for increasing spiritual growth in the believers at River Cities Community Church, Huntington, WV.  A long-term sermon plan was developed and implemented using the book of 1 Corinthians.  An instrument was developed and used to pretest and posttest in order to measure the effectiveness of the program.  Focus groups were utilized to complement the quantitative data.  The analysis of the posttest and data from the focus groups show a measurable change toward growth in some areas of Scriptural beliefs, attitudes, values, and behavior. A representative sampling of sermons is studies in order to trace this movement. A representative sampling of the congregation is interviewed in order to portray its response to this change and to discover connections between figural preaching and Christian practices. Noticeable change in the practice of preaching is discerned and described. A 'participant-observer' field method is used through the course of the study. A four-fold analysis (contextual, mechanical, organic, and symbolic) of a congregation's subculture aids the preacher in the work of ethnography.  The symbolic analysis is expanded to include seven congregational symbols readily accessible to the preacher.  The study utilizes story in reporting the findings that detail the congregation's unique world view, values, and ethos.  The study then explores the role of ethnography in sermon preparation and the preaching moment.  Members of the congregation participated in a parish project group to prepare and evaluate sermons.  Interventions were based on feedback from the project group, a congregational survey, and the effect of preaching on the congregation's vision for future ministries. This thesis project will propose a theory of emotional bonding based on the work of selected contemporary psychologists, and will apply that theory by means of a series of preaching tools.  Finally, the theory will be tested by means of a workshop developed for deaconate candidates.  Chapters One and Two addressed the theory of emotion and the understanding of the emotional bonding process.  Chapters Three and Four define and explain how metaphor, illustration, storytelling, self-disclosure, and humor work individually and collectively to create emotional bonding between preacher and congregation.  These two chapters explore the value and relevancy of these methods to the homiletic process. In Chapter Five the elements discussed in Chapters One-Four are integrated within the context of the deacons' workshop. Chapter One reviews the main communication eras and how each affected communication. Chapter Two assesses television's imaging of life and illustrates basic myths portrayed by television.  Chapter Three provides a theology of communication based on the Trinity.  Chapter Four explores television's hegemony and the critical demystification of television.  Chapter Five includes homiletic principles and strategies. This project consists of academic research coupled with qualitative research data collected from workshops and interviews with pastoral care professionals from the Caribbean.  Because there was insufficient scholarship available to conclusively make a direct link between slavery and the current subsequent behavior of Caribbean people, the author subsequently resorted to describing the oppression and its root causes, as it relates to slavery and colonialism and its resulting effects on the progeny of the slaves in the Caribbean.
