A sermon evaluation form was developed through research and consultation with Hershael York, Professor of Christian Preaching at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.  Six sermons were preached and then evaluated by the project director, eight congregational evaluators and four peer evaluators. The author utilized Vyhmeister's Quality research papers, chapter 13, to create a 'Program development model' as a form of research. The event included coordinated Sunday school classes, morning worship, and Bible study, all based on the lectionary passages for Epiphany. Research included an investigation of acting techniques, observation of videotaped sermons, engagement with a Parish Project Group who assisted in the preparation and critique of sermons, and feedback achieved through questionnaires and group discussions. The psycho-physical nature of public performance can be described by four terms--atmosphere, connection, concentration, radiation. This thesis attempts to make those concepts easier for the student to remember and apply. It also provides teaching strategies and goals for the teacher. The thesis uses an indicative approach to teaching rather than a deductive approach. It also uses The Systematic Design of Instruction, by Walter Dick and Lou Carey, for teaching to offer exact goals and measurable objectives. Research has demonstrated that few new graduates feel adequately prepared to step into the full-time preaching role required of a senior pastor.  Consequently, many new graduates become members of pastoral staffs in order to gain the experience and the skills needed to become a senior pastor.  Staff pastors who aspire to become senior pastors need further equipping and experience in homiletics.  Senior pastors have a unique opportunity to share the experience and expertise acquired through years of pulpit ministry. That experience and expertise may be shared through mentoring staff pastors in homiletics. Mentoring staff pastors in homiletics provides the fundamental principles of homiletics and a structured plan needed to equip an experienced senior pastor to successfully mentor a member of his pastoral staff in homiletics.  The manual is divided into three major parts, Mentoring in sermon preparation, Mentoring in sermon delivery, and Mentoring in sermon evaluation.  The manual is designed to provide individualized instruction for the staff members' specific needs. The author's premise is that expository preaching without notes is the most effective way to communicate God's word in a media culture.  Although we live in a visual culture, the author believes that the oral transmission of God's word is still a viable means of communicating the Good News.  Whereas the content of our message cannot and must not change, the method with which we communicate the message can and should change.  The particular method that will effectively communicate God's word in a media culture is preaching expository sermons without notes.  This thesis is comprised of five chapters.  In chapter one the author will state the case for expository preachingwithout notes. Chapter two will examine the role of preaching and preachers from a biblical perspective through the use of theological reflection.  Chapter three presents a focused literature review on the material currently available on expository preaching without notes.  Chapter four includes a syllabus and outlines for teaching a course on expository preaching without notes.
