The project director studied key resources in order to determine the essential elements of an evangelistic preaching model and established a standard of research. The project director submitted the essential elements and the standard of research for review to experts in evangelistic preaching. Following the identification of the essential elements of an evangelistic preaching model, the project director developed four sermons based on the evangelistic preaching model. The project director then preached the sermons to the congregation of The Beginnings Church. The project is divided into five chapters and a conclusion. The chapters deal with (1) a scriptural/historical survey of the notions friendship with God and friend of God, (2) a theology of preaching, (3) conversations with prominent Catholic preacher, (4) a spirituality of preaching identifying the preacher as a friend of God, and (5) the development of and implementation of a retreat for preachers focusing on a spiritualty of preaching grounded in friendship with God. With the population decline and aging of the Upper Midwest, many congregations are no longer able to support full-time ordained pastors. Congregations of several denominations have pressed into service licensed local pastors, and other lay persons to preach. United Methodist preachers serving in rural parishes in Iowa were coached in various aspects of preaching. The project consisted of an eight month preaching course that included preaching supervision, coaching, and methodology training. Through the participant's use of reflection papers lessons were gleaned that demonstrate supervision's effectiveness. This method of sermon preparation was a comprehensive approach integrating the benefits of long-term planning with an extended homiletical method. It mapped out a quarter of the year's preaching calendar and then staggered each sermon's preparation period, stretching it out over weeks instead of days. All of this was done with the hope that each stage of the expository process would be accomplished, and that the overall result would be an expository sermon with increased quality in both design and delivery. The research sought to assess the extent to which long-term sermon preparation increased the sermon quality. The results were incongruent and hence inconclusive. The quantitative research did not strongly support the hypothesis that long-term sermon preparation increases sermon quality in design and delivery. The qualitative assessment, however, did support the hypothesis strongly. The thesis explained that the baptized and confirmed are a people set apart to 'proclaim his virtues.' (1 Pt 2:9). Four specific practices of the preaching habitus; lectio divinia, congregational analysis, biblical criticism and rhetoric were explained in detail. A test workshop was conducted in which the practices were applied to the formation of catechists. The results of the application methods, obtained through qualitative research, are revealed in chapter four. Chapter One begins with an understanding of the use of story in preaching. Story finds its power in shared human experience. The narrative inductive art form of preaching is explored. The flexible application of the narrative method is relationally experienced. It addresses the fractures encountered in life, the loops we are thrown into, and the God who delivers us. Chapter Two presents an introduction to Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and the understanding of the CISM principles. This chapter examines crisis, CISM techniques, models of crisis intervention and the use of story in crisis intervention. Chapter Three defines the three functions of story: remembering, reconciling, and redeeming. This chapter introduces the 3 R's paradigm model through the use of story in preaching and crisis intervention. Examples illustrate the paradigm's effectiveness in preaching and crisis intervention. Chapter Four describes and presents the workshop. The workshop brought preachers and crisis interventionists together to enhance their use of story in their respective fields. Included in the appendix is the workshop handbook. This chapter assesses both qualitatively and quantitatively the effectiveness of the workshop.
