The thesis reviews studies on mainline decline and postmodernism.  It utilizes a radical understanding of the Pauline ecclesia as a community in which all relationships had to be renegotiated: 'neither slave nor free, Jew nor Greek, male nor female.'  The thesis draws on the author's experience in church development as a presbytery associate executive. The practice of ministry in a congregation made up of people of a variety of ethnic origins will encounter problems resulting from ethnic and cultural differences.  In order for the congregation to be integrated into a working and worshipping whole, these differences must be identified and appreciated.  In-depth interviews of eight family units chosen from the traditional congregation and recent-comers from Guyana were conducted, followed by three group meetings.  Transcripts were analysed, and the findings compared with the experience of similar congregations. Each series responded to needs expressed in the initial survey. Through a study of Zwingli and Calvin, one can see the interplay between a sovereign God and human responsibility in a individual's spiritual growth. Turretin, Edwards, and Pannenberg demonstrate the inherent fluidity within form intrinsic to Reformed spirituality. The research was carried out during work with several divorce support groups in a Presbyterian Church in Spokane, Washington, and a Reformed Church in America congregation in Holland, Michigan.  The purpose of the project was to help congregations establish a ministry both with and to divorced persons, and to demonstrate its consistency with the gospel.  It will help readers to understand the divorce experience both psychologically and theologically. Questionnaires were sent to 150 (99 returned) Presbyterian pastors.  The findings of these three studies were then correlated.  The results suggested 5 major styles of leadership: charismatic (Weber), dictatorial, participative, democratic, and laissez faire.
